they can thank Trump for putting pressure on the EU, but this also weakens Trump’s ability to bring Ukraine to the table
too early to see how russia sees this development

This is actually the same garbage. Russia and the US come up with terms, Ukraine says "nah, we don't want to give up anything" the US says "ok Russia, why don't you accept it anyway" Russia says "fuck no" and then we're back to square 1.

This does have some advantages over the asset seizure, such as 1) not having lawsuits hanging over the head of the aid and 2) they will still be able to use the interest from the assets for Ukraine aid, pretty much indefinitely. That is like 6 billion a year under current rates, which is nothing to sneeze at. If they had spent all the principal now then they obviously wouldn't have any interest income in the future.
