Not flame. I was waiting tables at this New Orleans themed restaurant in Greensboro, North Carolina as an undergrad when I caught myself speaking to my table and thinking something else at the same time. It was crazy.
At this time, I was an experienced and attentive waiter and had an established, efficient routine.
Side note for the tip threadingmos: I also realized by now that no matter what I did, good or bad, it wasn’t going to sway my tips much. Tipping is determined by social class, upbringing, and other external things not related to job performance. So I basically became a robot.
I remember I was saying something rote like, “I’ll be right back with your drinks and then I’ll take your order if you’re ready,” when I was thinking something like I need to get table 14 their check.
When I realized I was doing that it was a pretty cool feeling because there’s a 100% chance I was high.
