Do all their albums have an overarching story or theme or just certain ones or what? What's their deal? I like their songs but I've never really done a deep dive on them

They put out 10 albums before they had a hit. Their founder went insane and when he stepped away due to mental illness there was an unresolved power struggle. Basically David was a musical genius and Roger was some sort of poet who felt like he was telling a novel through his music. To be fair he's widely considered one of the greatest rock lyricists of all time. Their peak period was in the 70s. Dark Side is a masterpiece and likely the biggest selling rock record of all time. Wish You Were Here was also incredibly good although not quite as good as TDSOTM. Animals sucked and they were mostly cooked at this point but Roger was all butthurt that the band wasn't enough about him so he wrote The Wall which was a rock opera about his life and how he hated school and was mad at his dad or something. Roger wrote The Wall almost entirely by himself but at the end he realized that it didn't have any good songs on it so he brought in David to write Comfortably Numb and the only other songs on it that don't suck. Everything after The Wall is trash. Most of the early stuff is trash too. They hit it incredibly big in the 70s though. They were the highest selling act of the decade afaik.

underselling Roger Waters slightly. he wrote and arranged most of their material in full before the rest of the band played a note.

here is the demo for Money.

Money is by far Roger's greatest musical achievement. He didn't have that many hits in him though. I appreciate his lyrics. If it weren't for that one absolute banger what's his next best song? Hey You? I'm not saying he was trash but David's contributions have always dwarfed Roger's.

I mean, they were an album band, not a singles band. And he wrote most of the recognizable bits on their 50M-selling albums.

What other radio hits did they even have? Have a Cigar (Waters), Wish You Were Here (>50% Waters)? Another Brick in the Wall (Waters)?

It's all Waters. Gilmour was a glorified session musician. He lets his turdskin wife write all his songs post-Pink Floyd, lol.

How can you be so sure Waters wrote everything like that? He just got a lot of credits because he wrote the lyrics and from a legal perspective that's iron clad with regards to songwriting royalties. Gilmour got nothing for Money despite obviously making the song way better. But I agree on that one he was a session musician. I just don't think Waters wrote as much of the tunes as you think. He didn't write the guitar part on Wish You Were Here but you say he was above 50%? How? It was basically Gilmour's band and he picked all the songs they worked on. Waters didn't write the guitar part on SOYCD. You seem to think he did more than he did. Most of The Wall is unlistenable. Completely bloated nonsense. Gilmour stepped in and saved it.

Dark side and wish you were here are cohesive and tell a story. Both incredible albums. I don’t listen to the rest of their material that often. I think they’re kinda overrated bc they wind up on lots of top 10 lists. IMO they’re not quite there - their catalogue is definitely good but not comparable to the Beatles or stones (best 4 album run ever)

https://www.jesperjuul.net/ludologist/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/t-shirt-ihatepinkffloyd.jpg

I used to have a similar, snobby attitude towards them. Kind of the antithesis to the energy of rock and roll.

But now I like them and listen to their songs more than most punk stuff. Listen to See Emily Play and then Dark Side of the Moon -- hard to find a band that changed so much in a matter of years.
