For the majority of my twenties and thirties I identified as agnostic. My parents were moderate Muslims who taught me the basics of Islam like praying, fasting, charity, etc., but didn't force me to do anything after I reached the age of about 14. They were disappointed when I told them I was agnostic, but we didn't really talk about it much after that. I'll never forget, my mom once said to my dad, "I know he's going to come back one day."

And that's actually what has happened in the last few years. I still don't pray, though I want to start again. I'm teaching my kids the basics, like my parents taught me. Islam to me is about community, about having people in this world who understand you like you understand yourself. It's about tribe, about making sure my kids understand who they are on a genetic level. They will not have the benefit of growing up next to other Muslims, so I see it as my duty to pass our roots onto them. I also see us underdogs, as a misunderstood people in this country, and I've always identified with underdogs. Hopefully I can live a good, productive life to chip away at that impression.

But beyond that, I don't care. I think people should do what's best for them. I think apostates are sometimes misguided, like I was, and others have had their own negative experiences with Muslims that have turned them away from religion entirely. But I think they should do whatever they please and they certainly do not deserve to be murdered.

majority of the ulama have always held the view that apostates should be murdered according to islamic law, but I'm guessing most normal IRL muslims are more in line with your view

yeah I'd bet even in low literacy muslim nations this is a minority view, but there's a whole cottage industry of making muslims look bad so the cases where this occurs get magnified.

funny how this is basically the "culturally jewish, but not religious" thing. i don't know any former christians who do this; if they're out they're out. they don't keep going to church for the potlucks and good vibes.

do you ever get pulled into some heavy theology talk or prayer session and have to fake it? i just don't imagine muslims being cool with someone on the fence.

most muslims IRL are not going to confront you with probing questions about your theology or religious practice ime.

You'd be surprised. Most people in those circles genuinely want you to grow your faith and are trying to convince you rather than engaging in a discussion with you. I also pray on Eid and I'm sure you've seen how Muslims pray, but it's in large group settings. I do usually listen to and enjoy the khutbah or the sermon before and after prayer. It's all generally positive. No politics besides some discussion sometimes of Muslim suffering in various places.

weird perspective. there are lots of Christians who just go to church for holidays or occasional Sundays for the community but don't have any kind of religious practice beyond that.
