"With that said, to emphasize: this theory does not speak to the actual historical figure of Jesus, who stood up to the Pharisees for interpreting the Torah via the Oral Law in ways which contradicted its underlying intent, or for bitterly opposing usury and paying the ultimate price as a result."

To be fair,
CR, all of this "Jewish usury is an evil sin" stuff is actually just a HUGE misunderstanding of Jesus's teachings. God is fine with usury, ultimately.
(((Trust me, I know these things.)))

Hey Consuela: the reason the money CHANGERS were at the Temple was so that pilgrims could buy animals to sacrifice right there, instead of hauling a goat or a lamb 10,000 miles across the Roman empire. Jesus didn't think you could make a proper offering to God if you simply paid money for the animal. Jesus was like some kind of "shepherd." He tended to his own flock, some might say.
Get it now?

It's so 180. All these jews across the Roman empire save for years to afford the pilgrimage, and they pay a fortune for livery and accommodations to get all the way to Jerusalem just to sacrifice a lamb.
The Temple has these folks set up outside who will change your currency to shekels so you can buy a lamb from a local rancher, but then this rabbi appears out of nowhere saying "That's not a real sacrifice. You only paid money for that lamb." Moreover Jesus probably has his own lambs he brought with him (he didn't have to travel that far). It would have demoralized all these pilgrims and killed the local economy. They put "King of the Jews" on his crucifix as a kind of sick joke because that's how they thought he was acting.
That's also why Roman authorities stepped in. The economy was at risk. They didn't give a fuck about religious disputes among Jews.
