She told me the reason the govt tolerates so much price fixing in meat and dairy is because Americans will go apeshit if they see a gallon of milk or a pound of bacon rise above a certain level. At that time, bacon was $3.99/lb and she said it couldn't go to $4 without triggering riots. Even now I see bacon and milk prices have not really tracked inflation.
