And this is legitimately shit given the current price of housing anywhere good. A decent house in a decent suburb is $1.5 million and you are buying yourself a $30k property tax bill for the most part when you buy this. Your life will suck even at the cusp of the 1%. You really need to be in the top half of 1% to be thriving....

You need to not be relying on household income as a metric, that's for proles.

The Fed jukes the stats on the Survey of Consumer Finances so the official net worth numbers are unreliable. I think the basic idea is to make rich people feel poor so they keep working hard. They pay a professor at NYU named Edward Wolff to serve as a propagandist putting out wealth "studies" with their fake numbers.

So officially the threshold for top 1% wealth is 10-15 mil but those numbers don't add up. About .1% of estates pay the estate tax because of being over 14 mil. Obviously some people use trusts and other strategies to avoid the estate tax but that's probably a more realistic metric.

I don't totally follow. Don't most people who have $10 or $15m of wealth know how to hire tax advisors?

True, “annual allowance received from daddy” is a far more accurate metric.

Moar like Daddy’s Household Income

It’s so hilarious that your entire life of largesse is the result of tax avoidance schemes. If giving you money wasn’t tax advantaged you’d be begging CSLG for a job.

It's really a cautionary tale. If you go down the rabbit hole of trying to preserve your wealth and keep it in the family, you'll end up producing a son like RSF, who at 46 is divorced and has produced no heirs. That's no good.

People cluster by income, probably more than they used to because of the centralization of economic activity in cities. , This has a serious mitigating effect on wealth disparities. Poor people aren't as poor as they seem because they often live in cheaper areas, rich people aren't as rich as they seem because they often live in high COL areas.

A couple with HHI of 200k living in the exurbs of a Sunbelt city is doing, not exactly great, but totally fine. A couple making a million a year in Manahttan can feel pinched.

Exactly, its a freakin hamster wheel. I make that million but Im looking at what I saved these last few years and its lulzy. The kids private schools basically mean Im not doing any better than a prole and all I get for it is kids who speak Hebrew, Russian and Mandarin on top in lieu of retards.

What brought this thread on is that my wife got a $75k bonus which after tax will be more like $47k and instead of celebrating I just cut a check for my property taxes. Shit did absolutely nothing for us.

Sorry brother. I got out of New York a long time ago and returned to my homeland in Red America. I make similar income to what you've poasted but the last couple of years I've been building my business, hiring people, buying land, buildings, etc. Taxes are almost an afterthought.

No I didnt. And for the millionth time I have a 20% stake in a lab business that brings in $300k annually on top of my day job which brings in $500-600k a year depending on bonus. My wife makes 200-275ish on top when she isnt preggers and making $100k.

Getting rich in New York is not easy to do. Look at how many billionaires made their fortunes there, versus in places like Omaha, Nebraska or Bentonville, Arkansas or the North Dakota oilfield. There's more parity than one might expect.

But, but...people in Are Country don't have "the hustle and bustle" of The Big City. And what restaurants will they eat at?!?!?

There is so much opportunity outside of the major metros (NY/LA/SF) if one is willing to forego bullshit preftige (which really just creates the worst possible hamster wheel.) Way easier to do something entrepreneurial or take on "risk" in your career (and thus pursue real upside) if your downside is protected by having a lower COL.

And as much as XO shits on proles, there are some perks to having proles in your neighborhood. Warren Buffett unironically gets it right when it comes to living in the same house he bought 50+ years ago.
