I loved it. Modern cinema is so grossly cynical and insincere so watching Holdovers was like a 9/10 experience when it probably would have been a 6/10 15 years ago.

Richard Brody writing for The New Yorker described The Holdovers as "a pile of clichés" but one realized "with such loving immediacy that it feels as if Payne were discovering them for himself". Brody was more critical of the time period, arguing that the "hermetically sealed, historically reduced drama" ignored the politically fraught setting of the 1970s.[38]

hmm what an odd take, let's see here

"Brody grew up in Roslyn, New York. He is Jewish and"

This is a dumb take also since there were movies made in the 1970s that ignored the politically fraught etc

Thinking on it more I can see why the Heeb was perturbed, the movie is basically jew free except there are 2 jokes made at their (offscreen) expense. It also mocks porn & weed instead of jewishly venerating it. The whole time you're expecting it to be snarky and gay like all modern Film and it never really goes there. The movie is basically a 2 hour shoah
