AI Overview
From 2010 to 2024, the number of tax returns with itemized deductions sharply decreased following the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), which nearly tripled the standard deduction. The number of itemized returns dropped from 46.8 million in 2017 to 17.5 million in 2018 and has since remained at a much lower level.

The IRS is down over 25% of its headcount. The senior leadership ranks and most skilled technical roles have been obliterated. TIGTA is writing reports that are the equivalent of rending their garments. Several former commissioners are on the record lamenting that enforcement will basically be impossible in this environment.
Good advisors are pushing clients to get any aggressive tax positions onto this next couple of years returns so that they’ve rolled off the audit pool by the time the political tides turn and the agency can staff back up. And the scummy end of the advisory industry is going hog wild.
