rabbi gave her permission to do "shiurim," which is a complex procedure for pregnant/nursing women to trick god.

there's a fear that fasting would cut off her milk supply. so it's better to do shiurim than just not fast at all.

shiurim means measurement. you have tiny amounts of solid/liquid food in certain intervals, and it's considered like you're not eating because each amount and the intervals make it de minimus according to halacha

she could have a max of 1 oz of liquid every 9 minutes, and a max of 1 fluid oz of solid every 7 mins. each is independent of the other.

she used drinkable yogurt as the liquid. she used canned salmon or something i think as the solid.

if you stay ahead of the game, you won't get hungry/thirsty doing this.

Tyft

Would totally just make sense as an exception but love how they force meme duplicity and trickery into the rationale

"It's considered like you're not eating"

sukkot is on monday. wait until you hear the trickery for my sukkah.

a sukkah has to have 3 "walls." we put these straps around and it's considered a wall according to halacha: https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5786cdb8893fc0cdccddb4d7/1497629618855-AN1HOKIP4BKJF93WBBRD/4.jpg?format=1000w

if each strap is no more than ~9.5" apart, it's considered that the straps are effectively contiguous and there's no gap in between them.

and if the highest stap is about 32" high, it's considered as if it's a complete wall to the heavens.

no, you're not understanding. the sukkah can be as big as you want. the overall metal structure you're looking at is probably 8' x 10' and 7'-8' high

the three black straps going around the bottom combine to make the entire thing a "wall" somehow. the black straps are probably at 9", 18", and 27" or so. even though the black straps dont go all the way up to the top, it's still a wall

in other words, the three straps at the bottom somehow create a 7-8' tall wall

it's a booth. kinda like a hut. men have to eat all meals in the sukkah for the entire holiday (7 days). many sleep in it too.

it'll go in your backyard if you have room. driveway if you're prole and don't have room.

people decorate them, e.g.,

some people just use a full canvas for a wall:

https://www.sukkahdepot.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/ez-classic_optimized-scaled.jpg

in israel, they're generally wood:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/da/Sukkots_with_wall_from_wood.JPG

i think they're claustrophobic and like the idea of an open-ish sukkah, so we just use straps instead of a true wall

the fasting leniency stuff is only for pregnant/nursing women, and even then, a lot of rabbis light not grant a woman those exceptions.

explain why it is only considererd not eating when youre in this category? according to the slight of hand, everyone shuld qualify.

catholics just straight up say you must fast but fasting means a big meal or two regular meals

in plain english... yom kippur is our holiest day and fasting is the most important part of the day, so we want to minimize the transgression both in 1) the number of people who arent truly fasting, and 2) in how such people dont truly fast to make it as close to fasting as possible.

there's also a biblical prohibition not to put your life in danger. so we have to reconcile the biblical obligations to fast and to not put your life in danger, and this is a very limited work around that only applies in rare situations and is done in the most temperate way possible.

because we want to balance the two concerns in the best way possible. because fasting on YK is so important, we dont want to tell pregnant women do not bother fasting and they can just go eat as many bacon cheeseburgers as they want. we want to create an exception, to use legal terms, on the narrowest possible grounds within the letter of the law.

and the halachic principle that eating a volumetric ounce (30 cubic cm) every 9 mins is not really eating is how we minimize the transgression of eating on YK.

there are other areas in jewish law about what constitutes eating. for example, if you have less than 30 cc of bread, you don't say grace because that's not considered a meal.

the rabbis imported the definition of eating from other areas to create this workaround.

but you said her titties would just be less milky, that's not exactly putting her life in danger. does it prohibit putting other people's lives in danger?

yes, it includes putting others in danger.

our rabbi was fairly lenient. he says you can defer to medical advice, and if your doctor says it's not a good idea because your milk supply could dry up, you're entitled to rely on that.

in other words, trust the thienth.

a more stringent rabbi might have told someone in her shoes to fast.

no, each person has an individual obligation.

there's certain things the jewish people do collectively, or that men can do for their family, but fasting on YK is for all 13+ men and 12+ women.
