replace your front door with a commercial fire rated metal door. put a wood veneer cut out over it glued down. get a kaba for it : http://www.kaba-ilco.com/kaba-access-control/products/product-selector-find-the-right-lock/e-plex-electronic-locks/471886/e-plex-1500.html
install aluminum shutters (german ones are good) for the inside window - you will need one for each window. these are interior shutters so they will seal off your house completely and no one can get in by breaking a window.
add hardi plank siding. concrete based siding will deter saws cutting through walls.
get a passive alarm with wifi integration. a honeywell system with glass break, motion sensors etc will do. get a generic ones not a proprietary like an ADT.
add cameras and install them in the aluminum shutter boxes. these will be virtually invisible from the outside but able to give you 360 degree views of your house exterior. get a quality axis set of cameras - while expensive they can also give you FLIR and night vision.
you can tone this down to customize it etc.

Obviously, the sky is the limit if you start adding options. But a "barebones system" from Gaffco is going to be heads and shoulders above anything ADT could offer and it will keep your parents safe.

the first door thing is connected to all outside doors and sends notifications to my phone and their phones
the other things are connected to windows and just make a loud sound as a deterrent
the locks go on the windows as well
