Female velvet spiders exhibit a remarkable type of maternal care unique among arachnids. Upon the birth of her brood, the mother spider liquefies her internal organs and regurgitates this material as food. Once her capability to liquefy her insides is exhausted, the young sense this and consume the mother.[5]

Spiders have a wider range of bizarre and marvelous evolutionary adaptations than any other type of animal I can think of. Orb weavers seem to have achieved the perfect balance with nature. They never have to do anything, food just comes to them. One orb weaver makes 8 different kinds of silk and that's all it needs.

I like little spiders and take them outside to be free if I find one in the house. I never kill them or anything like that.

Vollrath and Selden (2007) make the bold proposition that insect evolution was driven less by flowering plants than by spider predation – particularly through orb webs – as a major selective force.[15]
