Of those 52,500 applicants, approximately 6,500 non-US citizen international medical graduates (IMGs) secured a position. The match rate for US MD seniors was 92.6%, and US citizen IMGs was about 76%. Keep in mind, if you don't match, you usually have to wait an entire year to try again. Meaning that there are actual US citizens sitting unemployed at home while Rajesh bumbles his way through the hospital.
Most residency programs HATE IMGs because of bad experiences with, you guessed it, Indians. On paper, Indians look great, they passed their certification exams with flying colors and have the usual puffed up resume typical of Indians. But when they get to the United States and start working, it turns out that they have the social skills of a slug and constantly have to be handheld. And then it later transpires that their test scores were the result of a WhatsApp cheating ring and their ECFMG certification letting them practice gets revoked and they have to go home.
Generally, the only residency programs that hire Indians are staffed by, you guessed it, Indians. Most American med school grads know to avoid these places like the (literal) plague because they have typical Indian working conditions.
Anyone who moans about how we need these Indians is either Indian or an idiot, or maybe both.
