I watched the broadway production Hadestown in movie theaters tonight with no background knowledge other than it involved two Greek myths.

I didn’t like it much at first because the show is set in New Orleans and featured a cast that was decidedly un-Greek, and the plot was initially difficult to follow. However, after about the half hour market I became invested in the story and ended up really liking it - there are a couple of great musical numbers, and the musical ends on a non-redemptive note, which I was quite (pleasantly) surprised by (with an element of localized hope that the next time the story is told that things will end better, which I thought was fine - we all need hope, it is cosmic redemption that I don’t think holds up to observation). The highlights to me were the actors playing Hermes (André De Shields at 80 years old, wow), whose featured role in the musical I found synchronious (given I had no foreknowledge of what I was going to watch), and Hades (Patrick Page with an amazing voice), respectively. Hades’ argument that the people of Hadestown willingly traded their freedom for security, then wanted to renege on the deal at the first sign of weakness, also resonated - he was giving the people what they wanted, and they wanted to turn on him for it. It reflects a tension I've written about before: power often requires preserving the conditions of power, even when those same conditions narrow consciousness. The endless Persephone/Hades cycle was also resonant - history as cyclical, not progressive. That symbolic complexity of the characters was deeper than straightforward moral binaries.

If you get a chance, I recommend seeing it in theaters, which has been extended because audiences are really liking it. It will teach you some Greek myth too.

8.5/10. The review might be different on rewatch; I very rarely grant 9+’s, and while there were some strong musical numbers, there were also a number that kind of fell flat.

of course not politically, no broadway show is. but it is non-redemptive, utilizing cyclical history instead of history-as-progress, and its characters are morally complex

Is it a musical?

I saw wicked and & Juliet on broadway recently and liked both. If I lived in nyc I would be going to the theater often

Yeah it seems very xoxo coded. Like a musical written by Evan39. I don't think I could stomach an authentic Anne Frank musical.
