too little time to change their focus. duke was focused on breaking the press. once they turned the ball over, they barely pressured karaban. duke's defenders were nowhere near mullins

Evans was guarding the 3 point permiter, if Mullins took a step or two closer he would have had a hand in his face not that it would have mattered. Kenpom says that 3PT defense matters as about as much as free throw defense.

i think 3PT distance matters quite a lot. also shot type matters a lot. when karaban got the ball he was moving toward the uconn basket and had to suddenly stop when boozer jumped in front of him. while he could have shot, his shot would have been difficult because he had to steady himself from stopping his momentum and make sure he shot over the athletic boozer. karaban wisely stopped and found mullins for an unguarded catch and shoot.

in terms of mullins positioning, i don't think he was thinking too much about positioning himself for a shot. he's a freshman and passed to a senior karaban who he probably expected to take the shot. mullins kind of lucked out that the duke defenders overran him, left him so open, and didn't even jump to challenge him

lol @ leaving someone from indiana open anywhere for a gaming winning shot. he 100% knew where he was shooting from, look at his hip rotation and right leg movement on the shot.

He definitely adopted a long range shooting technique, but what poaster above was talking about was his positioning before the shot because he wasn't expecting Caraban to pass it back.

mullins made the right call with the pass, caraban SHOULD have caught the ball and stepped straight into his shot. he was too gun shy with the defender approaching him and dished it back.

I agree that Mullins wasn't thinking about positioning. He said as much. He was 0-4 that day from 3PT and he said he looked up, saw 4 seconds on the clock and passed it "to someone who made shots," and was a little surprised when Caraban passed it right back to him. At that point he had to heave it up, but watch it again, Evans is crouching down in front of the 3PT line essentially daring Mullins to take it from 35ft. Careful what you ask for I guess.

the big mistake was the Dookie (#2, Boozer) who took one dribble and then stopped dribbling. when you post in the center, wide open, to break the press and you get the ball, you are supposed to hold the ball over your head and look down court. the dribble gave some time to be double teamed and it killed the "run away dribbling" option as well.

They started with exactly 10 seconds and didn't need to advance past halfcourt, after a competent ft shooter had the ball any pass or dribble at all was a mistake.

Real retarded + bad coaching + lack of basketball IQ.

So many top tier coaches had absolutely rancid dogshit "final play" sequences in these recent big games.

- Florida AZN going buckwild toward the hoop before pussying out and "passing" into a scrum under the basket

- Kansas fucked up somehow iirc and had a horrible final minute or two

- St John's stuck with 5'9" "up my ass" Darling and didn't have red hot Tall Man Prey in the game when they needed a critical rebound and big shot

- Duke ljl I would have expected that from buckwild Houston or Bama bros, but ur supposed to be HIGH BASKETBALL IQ (aka white or white-passing) and you don't know how to kill 10 seconds
