This collection contains the code, de-identified analysis inputs, and documentation needed to reproduce the tables and figures for “Crowd-Sourced Chinese Genealogies as Data for Demographic and Economic History.” The study evaluates whether crowd-sourced Chinese genealogical records can reproduce established demographic patterns and support regression-based research in economic history.
The underlying source compilation contains 192,310 unique individuals associated with 535 family roots, spanning many centuries and all provinces of China. The records were harvested from the FamilySearch Family Tree, reconnected into multigenerational pedigrees, de-duplicated, and geocoded to county-level administrative units. The analysis documents population growth, sex ratios, and migration, compares these patterns with benchmarks from Chinese historical demography, and presents regressions relating province-century sex ratios to recorded childlessness and patrilineal generation depth to out-migration. |
