Winfield man was registered sex offender, charged with multiple felonies in eastern Kansas before killing family
KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) - The man who shot and killed his wife and four children, then himself, had ties to the Kansas City area, including a long criminal history.
KCTV Investigates discovered that Ronald H. Williams Sr. has a long record of criminal charges in Kansas, including an incident nearly three decades ago that resulted in him becoming a registered sex offender in the state.
Williams, who also had aliases of Freddie Williams, Laron Williams and Jerome Williams, was convicted in September 1998 of attempted indecent liberties with a child for an incident involving a 15-year-old girl.
According to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation’s registered sex offender list, Williams’ offense happened in June 1997, when he was in his 20s.
Kansas court records revealed Williams faced felony charges for drugs, battery, assault on a law enforcement officer, burglary, attempted rape, kidnapping and more for incidents ranging from 1995 to 2024. He faced felony charges in Wyandotte, Johnson, and Franklin counties throughout that time.
On Tuesday, the Winfield Police Department in southern Kansas said officers received a call at 8:50 a.m. from a man who said he had killed his entire family and was going to kill himself.
Officers responded to a home near 9th Avenue and Stewart Street and heard a gunshot. They set up a perimeter and then broke through the front door of the home.
Inside, police said six people were dead, including Williams Sr., and 44-year-old Kelly L. George.
The four other victims were children, ages three to nine.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Winfield Police Department are investigating the shooting.
