That's more or less what happened. The crazy part is that they kept elevating this dude who was talking out of his ass, had no ability to do any real academics. He published in 'academic' journals that were like "Queer Theory" and "Homoerotic Tales and How to Be More Gay" using Ph.D theses stolen from obscure, little known students copied almost verbatim lol.

Then some random American guy who lives there was like "uhh hey guys. this uh is all made up."

They fired him and he killed himself immediately.
