The upper middle class makes up 31% of U.S households, up from 10% in 1979.

Sounds more like the $ that used to = UMC now = middle class and the old middle class earners are now poor.

LJL I saw the article in the WSJ today and just laughed my ass off. It's from an American Enterprise Institute report that defines UMC as a family earning between 5x and 15x the poverty guideline. Or $133k - $400k.

When you read the article it just highlights people who behave in a historically typical middle class fashion. Driving older cars, having cash on hand to pay off random $1,500 HVAC repair bills, etc. It's just a rebranding of "middle class" that is obviously disingenuous. It's like watching Roseanne in the 90s and saying "oh wow they're UMC!"

Also, a household of three is considered "poor or near poor" if they're making $40K or less. So fucking stupid.

This retarded "study" is just based on income. It's pure fantasy. They're trying to tell us 1/3 of households are doing great and buying boats and shit (in the WSJ article; I didn't read this one) when we already know that 2/3 of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck.

There's a thread about the WSJ article on this: https://xoxohth.com/thread.php?thread_id=5853684&forum_id=2

They're GASLIGHTING US. They're defining these categories relative to the poverty line. Compared to 1979, the numbers don't reflect the costs of housing, education, and health care, which are rising waaay faster than the cost of goods. They also don't take into account location. Just income distribution on a national level.

2/3 of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. That CANNOT be squared with the idea that 1/3 of American households are Doing Great.

> "The whole distribution of Americans, from poor to rich, has done better over time. And to the extent that fewer people are within a fixed income range that we might think of as middle class, that's just because everybody's gotten richer over time," Scott Winship, a co-author of the report and a senior fellow at AEI, told CBS News.

LIAR LIAR LIAR LIAR. Buying power has DECREASED STEADILY since the 80s (thanks Reagan!) due to the rising cost of housing and education while wages aren't even close to keeping up. Americans are only "richer" in absolute dollars compared to the cost of GOODS. That doesn't mean ANYTHING when we all have to pay for HOUSING.

One more thing. They're talking about household income. In the '70s and '80s and even '90s, most families could survive on one income. Now it's much, much more common for both partners to work – not because of fEmInIsM but because of NECESSITY since HOUSING AND EDUCATION AND HEALTH CARE are so fucking expensive. So yes household income is gonna increase. Jfc.
