Trump resorting to lies that he didn't know about the Israeli attack to beg Iran to stop bombing the Qatar LNG refinery. Looks like Iran might end up cutting side deals with the rest of the world and the US just has to sit and take it.

It's obvious that the plan was to decapitate the leadership and the hope was Iran would collapse. It's why Trump was telling the Iranian people to rise up right after the initial strikes. If that didn't work, Trump probably thought he could broker a ceasefire, but Iran can just say no. In modern missile and drone warfare, offense beats defense.

i think the mullahs care about the survival of the iranian polity

i read a lot of SL kho and kha's talks and speeches and what not to get a feel for them and their priorities and it'd be hard to say that they don't care about the iranian peoples. khameini in particular had a particular vision for the country that it doesn't seem like they had a broad enough coalition to enervate the population into carrying out. liberalizations periodically occurring over the last decade or two have made it clear that there's some bowing to democratic or common sentiments. the thing that confuses secularized western observers is just that they care just as much about shia islam and islam in general as they do about certain aspects of the polity

yeah hard strikes were a really bad option and i suspect that straight up diapering and soft (and politically justified, maybe) sabotage at the CIA and NSA probably limited their options to that

the US repeatedly time and time again overestimates their good will/moral authority in these middle eastern countries and it is disheartening to see the same mistakes made back in the Iran-Iraq war still being made decades later

the Anglosphere's ability to use the military to succesfully make in-roads into the culture of a nation died shortly after the Malayan Emergency

Even for Trump this is a preposterous notion. Assume for a second the Israelis spent the last 8 months planning for and equipping an internal resistance force that they always expected to fight the regime after Israel softened it up via an air campaign. How would that scenario look different from what is currently happening on the ground in Iran after 3 weeks of the war?

first, i dont think its within trumps capacity to be blackmailed. he's stubborn and outspoken and has never shied away from controversy. and he just denies until he dies. what could they have thats any worse than his prior shit? even if they had epstein island vid of him fucking kids while holding their birth certificate and that days paper, he'd deny it.

second, he's been an israel dickrider forever. occams razor is that he's still an israel dickrider. he spent much of the campaign criticizing biden for not supporting israel enough.

I don't even think it's blackmail in the traditional sense. They tried to kill him during the campaign and almost certainly said "side with us and your family gets rich, go against us and you die." They probably threatened to kill his family, too.

I assume they thought they'd be rid of him after Term 1's constant lawfare / Russiagate bullshit and then the endless lawfare after the 2020 "election." But he wouldn't go away.

i think that's highly likely. i don't necessarily agree with gunner's take. trump has had fairly good instincts overall but lately has just been a disaster. and yea he's always been an israel boomertard, but this entire term has been something else, just out of this world.

above all, trump cares about his legacy. it's quite a gamble to go to war with iran and think it'll go smoothly and be short. at this point, unless something huge breaks, trump is going to go down in history as one of the worst presidents we've had. if he legitimately got here through his own poor decisionmaking, then jesus christ lol.

kushner is one of the main architects of the war, has been married to ivanka since 2009, and had key roles in the first administration. to believe trump is compromised would mean israel has had a gun to his head a decade before he got into politics.

yes, this is an escalation from his previous stuff. so is ICE, tariffs, and many other things. i think it's more likely trump is simply more effective and doing stuff he lkterally campaigned on (dickriding isrsel, not going to war with iran per se) because he has more political capital and experience.

and again, its hard to even fathom what they could have on yrump to make him do something he wouldn't do otherwise. and also, he's just one man, he still needs buy in from many others. they can't all be compromised or agents of israel. hegseth, vance etc are real people just like tdnw and sealclubber.

To be fair, people have argued that Israel may have actually worked to help get him elected in 2016, not Russia. So maybe the rot goes further back than we'd (I'd) like to admit.

It just seems pretty dramatic to go from 2015 - 2020 Trump to the guy we're dealing with today and think "nah he's always been this way." Add-in all of his historical statements over the decades and it just seems unreal.

he flip flops on stuff constantly. he's always been inconsistent.

how would israel have "got him elected." did they trick you into voting for him? no, you supported him because you supported what he said. maybe if he was some kamala type that got forcememed by institutions despite low popular enthusiasm, but trump was the exact opposite: institutions ran a full court press against him his entire political career.

are you and all the people who voted for trump victims of propaganda? or did you just intelligently make a decision based on the information you had?

one of the best things about trump is how he's unabashedly himself and tweets directly without concern for political correctness. i don't even see how his success could have been facilitated by propangda. i don't see how a propagandist could rein him in. and in any case, he's been a victim of biased reporting from all sides his entire career, so how is there even evidence of favoring him to the point it's responsible for his success?

im saying that it aligns enough that it's probably the case and speculating about kompromat is unjustified.

im not some lib gloating about "haha told you so!" it was reasonable to hope that he'd stay out because of his antiwar rhetoric and first term. i did. but i also knew he is erratic, dabbles in neocon boomerisms, and has been an honorary jew for decades. so, im disappointed, but im not so suprised that im searching for reasons in blackmail conspiracy theories.

Yeah, we can keep pounding them with bombs, drones, missiles, etc., but that's not going to cripple the global economy. Iran bombing gulf energy infrastructure, preventing tankers from traversing the strait, etc. will cripple the global economy.

Trump needs this to wrap up by summer, but Iran can keep it going until the US says fuck it and goes home.

Trump has the watch, but Iran has the time.

Cr. It's a very different task invading, overthrowing, and occupying vs. defending your home. If only we had a recent example of a more powerful country unexpectedly getting bogged down in a many years long war after underestimating the target of their invasion.

I’m going to give you a not so secret pro tip. Trump lacks—because he and his team have systematically dismantled it this past year—a credible decision-making apparatus with domain expertise. He has surrounded himself with yes men bros and fearful sycophantic suck offs. That wild eyed sense you and I have that he is making decisions by the seat of his pants based on bad or no information with no critical decision-making process? It’s actually like that. And unfortunately, given his position as commander in chief, that means we can stumble into things like an active escalating foreign conflict.

Nah, all military engagements are gambles no matter how much you plan, etc. In this case, the gamble was that the combined strikes by the US+Israel would cause the Iranian state to *politically* collapse, that is to say the Iranian leadership would throw in the towel despite not being militarily & materially beaten. But if they don't politically collapse, then you have to defeat them militarily (i.e. beat them so that they can no longer resist or retaliate to the point the political leadership collapses or surrenders).

Trump took a gamble that they could hit them hard and decisively enough that they would politically collapse/give in. That initial gamble didn't work so now there's effectively a boat race where Trump is betting on the US+Israel can degrade the Iranian state faster than Iran can blow up the global economy. Who will win? Time will tell.

This is such an idiotic post.

How much of our and Israel's resources over the last 50 years have been devoted to gathering intelligence on Iran? The idea that we just didn't have the right info to accurately gauge Iran's political, social and/or military resilience is absolute nonsense. But even assuming you're right, do you think we should start wars with such limited intelligence to have no way of accurately anticipating the fallout?

dude even with perfect intelligence the outcome is unknown. it's a gamble, like a coin flip. i know there's two sides but i can't say how it'll land. it's really no one's fault and we shouldn't judge too harshly when people take calculated risks. let's all just move on ok, we can chalk it up to fate but its silly to point fingers.

The weird hole in the “Iran will win via an indefinite war of attrition” take is the assumption that Israel did nothing after last summer to prepare for an armed insurrection by the anti-regime resistance on the ground (ie the side that has 80+% popular support) even though it revealed it had deep intel penetration through out the security forces. Basij aren’t getting paid right now and that’s not going to change any time soon. And they aren’t used to/trained to fight against an armed population, let alone an opposition that has any kind of special forces coordination/intel, logistics and air support. It seems very likely that the Basij sustain losses in the 10s or 100s of 1000s before the end of the summer, and mass abandonment/defection decimates their internal security/suppression apparatus. And if that happens the regime is toast.

The problem is there is little organization for an anti-regime insurrection, let alone an armed one. And the internet shut down makes it harder to organize. Mass defection would need to happen

Did people really think Iran would just go belly up after a few air strikes? This is the same people that fought Iraq, a technologically and materially superior opponent, for 10 years at enormous cost. They have zero reason whatsoever to give in as they know the Israeli states of America will just come back again later.
