Now I know the japs are into some weird shit, but the whole tone of this documentary was just horrifyingly sad. For those who haven't seen it, the synopsis is young girls in Japan try to become "idols", meaning they expect this insane level of love and devotion from fans for basically doing nothing other than weird little performances. They promote themselves maniacally across social media and the internet to get these "careers" going where people just donate to them or pay money to see them. Their "supporters" even more creepily are typically lonely, middle aged men who haven't been "successful" in the traditional sense due to Japan's lousy economy or because they're just dull, and they follow and stalk them obsessively. They buy all kinds of merchandise, promote them, pay hundreds of dollars to meet them and shake their hands. And the "hand shake" meet and greets are clearly sexual for some of them, sometimes security pulls them away. It's like the "idol" girls are basically being paid to allow a certain level of stalking. My god...what a weird fucking spectacle.
