it wasn't just some cute hobby where you bought stuff from the store and puzzle-pieced it together in a risk-free environment. those were the early days of electrical products, when a lot of principles of grounding and shielding and how to insulate wires were still being figured out. capacitors in the early-1900's were still being made out of paper insulation, which of course had shock and fire risks.

early wireless radios used shit like leyden jars to store electrical charge, which was absurdly dangerous (they are literal glass jars full of electrical voltage which can 'discharge' by accident right through your heart). it was a fairly dangerous avocation for decades, and we lost quite a few guys along the way.
