i've thought about gunning for the sort of admin jobs that can lead to that, higher positions in deans offices and the like. they tend to require a phd and +5 years in an academic position to gatekeep against people from industry swooping in, as far as i can tell, so salaries haven't exploded to match e.g. what someone with a finance background could reasonably demand in a development office.
i have that part down, but the catch-22 is that they want someone with something like a business background, so it's good work once you get your foot in the door and work in a deans office vel sim. while still teaching for a few years. i've gotten past the first round of interviews for one position i applied for just as a kind of "fuck it, why not" move. maybe i'll go for another if something interesting comes up.
i'm still too much of a prestige whore to jump to admin without a good advancement trajectory, since it's hard to jump back to a professor position, but who knows, friend. it's probably beyond my autistic social skills, but BIG CURICULUM decision-making and cocktail parties with donors and presidents etc. as a provost would make for a pretty sweet mid- to late-career.
