John had written the song years earlier, but didn't tell the rest of the band until the day or was recorded, when they were supposed to be recording Lady Madonna. For some reason John didn't want the record execs to know. Moreover Lady Madonna was Paul's song, so he didn't want to record Hey Bulldog at all.
