Pope Leo XIV has revealed the reason he chose this name while calling AI the biggest threat to humanity
Pope Leo XIV has revealed his decision to take a different name was inspired by the challenges posed by artificial intelligence (AI) and a new industrial revolution.
Speaking on Saturday, two days after his election, during a meeting with the College of Cardinals, the pope referenced Pope Leo XIII’s landmark 1891 encyclical "Rerum Novarum", which addressed workers’ rights and is considered the foundation of modern Catholic social teaching. He now is consumed by a desire to reaffirm the Catholic church’s social doctrine in light of modern challenges.
“There were various reasons for my choice,” Leo explained before adding: “But mainly because Pope Leo XIII in his historic encyclical addressed the social question in the context of the first great industrial revolution.”

The newly appointed pope said the church now faces new questions of human dignity, justice and labor in the age of artificial intelligence, and he reaffirmed the church’s commitment to addressing these issues through its social doctrine.
He said: “In our own day, the church offers to everyone the treasury of her social teaching in response to another industrial revolution and to developments in the field of artificial intelligence that pose new challenges.”
Leo's address was divided into two parts - prepared statements followed by a dialogue with cardinals on key topics raised during the conclave, Crux Now reports. He thanked them for their support, calling their presence a sign that “the lord will not leave me alone in bearing this responsibility.”
Reflecting on the recent death of Pope Francis, he called this period a new phase in the church’s journey, explaing: “It is up to us to be docile listeners to his voice and mindful that God loves to communicate himself in the whisper of a gentle breeze.."
The pontiff urged the cardinals to renew their commitment to the vision set forth by the Second Vatican Council, which he said was vividly embodied by Francis in his 2013 exhortation "Evangelii Gaudium". Leo emphasized themes from the document, including missionary conversion, synodality, and care for the marginalized.

“These are evangelical principles that have always inspired and guided the life and activity of God’s family,” he said, calling them signs of God’s mercy and hope for all who seek truth and peace.

Leo concluded his address with a quote from Pope Paul VI’s inaugural message: “May it pass over the whole world like a great flame of faith and love and bless humanity abundantly, now and always, with the very strength of God.”
Yesterday, Pope Leo XIV outlined his papal vision, highlighting artificial intelligence as one of the most pressing issues facing mankind and pledging to carry forward some of Pope Francis' key priorities.
However, to clearly indicate that he was stamping his mark on the papacy, Leo embarked on his first journey since his election, visiting a sanctuary dedicated to the Madonna located south of Rome. This site holds special significance for his Augustinian order and his namesake, Pope Leo XIII.
The locals of Genazzano congregated in the square outside the main church, which houses the Madre del Buon Consiglio (Mother of Good Counsel) sanctuary, as Leo arrived and greeted them. This sanctuary is overseen by Augustinian friars and has served as a pilgrimage site since the 15th century. The previous Pope Leo had elevated it to a minor basilica and expanded the adjacent convent in the early 1900s.
After offering prayers in the church, Leo addressed the townspeople, telling them that having the Madonna in their midst was both a blessing and a responsibility. He then bestowed a blessing before returning to his car, a black Volkswagen.
