While the world celebrates “Pride,” the Church remembers something else:
The Ugandan Martyrs — young men who chose chastity and fidelity to Christ over submission to sin, even unto death.
In 1886, King Mwanga II of Buganda (modern Uganda) demanded sexual submission from the young pages of his court.
23 were Anglican, 22 were Catholic — some newly converted, yet already courageous.
For refusing immoral homosexual acts, these Christian men were beaten, stabbed, and burned alive.
They chose purity over life itself. Truth triumphs even over death!
One of them, Denis Ssebuggwawo, was torn to pieces for evangelizing another page — stealing from the king his “favorite sex toy.”
King Mwanga responded with rage. But these brave men responded with faith.
The king rounded up his pages and separated them into two groups:
📍Those who did not pray remained beside him.
📍Those who did were placed behind a fence.
St. Charles Lwanga led the praying boys to the fence. They were bound and marched 20 miles to execution.
