the weird pop band of tongan mormon siblings from minnesota. the first three tracks (curiosity/crush on you/you got it all) are solid, but then it lags. some of these album cuts like "love umbrella" are just limp studio-slop productions. afterthoughts of afterthoughs. it picks back up near the end with "right before my eyes," but the big ballad "la-la" just sounds like a mid-70's R&B track re-skinned with 80's synths.

the stuff from this album that they put on the radio is all they needed to put, because the rest is not particularly interesting. this does not strike me as a 'deep cut' kind of band with lots of 'hidden gems' and intriguing b-sides.

some trivia - this album's biggest hit "you got it all" was written by rupert holmes. you got it all's b-side is called "burn the candle," and it sucks. "crush on you" was remixed by the english band Nero and released as a single in 2011:

"Crush on You" is one of those semi-forgotten 80s songs that retains its ability to suck you right back to 1986, like Proust's madeleine.

it's familiar but not *overly* familiar.. it lights up that section of the 80s engram neurosubstrate that hasn't been blown out by too much subsequent pop culture associational overwriting.

Oh Shiela is like that too. They didn’t make songs like that before or since (thankfully). There is only one place and one time to which they belong.
