Some of my are-country family is close with a family whose son has been in and out of jail for drug, DUI, and theft-type crimes his whole adult life.

He has been out for a couple years and is facing a slew of new charges. They're all variations of possessing drugs, dealing drugs, and using drugs to entice women/girls to have sex with him, including 16 and 17 year olds, which is a huge felony with a huge potential sentence.

My aunt relayed that the DA offered him a plea "deal" of 25 years and life-time sex offender registry when he gets out.

What's the point of a plea offer like that? Might as well take your shot at trial. He's 40ish and a long-time user, so life expectacy after that sentence probably isn't much. He's in a truth in sentencing state, so he would serve all (or almost all) of the sentence.
