For 1000 years the whole point of England was not to work. The aristocracy all got their handouts from the King, and would support a new King if it meant more and better gibs. Everyone who was in a position to just wanted to jockey among each other to receive a fiefdom, the path to riches and leisure. Then they could appoint the middle men to run the estate while they collected taxes from their ppl, some to give to the king and some to keep for their own.
And they got MAF when the King wouldn't give handouts. For example in 1403 Henry Percy Earl of Northumberland tried to overthrow Henry IV after supporting him becoming King just 4 years earlier, all because Henry wouldn't give Percy enough gibs.
This still exists. Constant jockeying among people who have no careers and do nothing productive to get appointed to the House of Lords. These people mock work, and the lower classes all know it, and it shapes the whole country's work ethic.
