Using the full range of the spectrum from D to A. I would then respond to requests for explanations of their shitty grades with further AI slop.
The context is that I forbid use of Gen AI, but wink wink nudge nudge suggest that if they cheat, and God help their souls recover from their slothful and deceitful ways, they should be doing so thoughtfully and carefully, such that I can't tell. In this class, half of the papers had similar first lines and similar, shitty main arguments. Many reused phrases from the prompt in incoherent ways, as if they just tried to plug it in and let it do what it do.
Education is a joke now and I'm at wit's end. I've never been sincerely angered by students before, but disrespecting my time when I've always made it a point to give detailed feedback hits home, as if a personal slap to the face.

What's stopping you from just giving them a zero if you judge their paper to be AI
I mean I know the answer is that your administrators will chimp out after the kids and their parents complain. But that's what you're going to have to do in order to stop them from using AI

If that's how lex really feels about this (I'll let him speak for himself) then he should just leave the teaching profession asap
I agree that future classes of students will be just as likely - in fact, they will be much more likely - to use AI to do their assignments. So he either takes a stand on it now, and accepts having a reputation for zero tolerance on AI, or he spends the rest of his career going through the motions for a bunch of kids who are only there because they have the expectation that they can use AI to do all their work for them
It's not at all clear (to me) that having a reputation as a zero tolerance for AI professor would work out badly for him. But if it would, and he dislikes kids using AI to do their assignments, he should just get a new job. Because it's going to get much much "worse"

like any other job, people are often forced to do things that are destructive their goals because thats how the organization works.
you might as well be telling a junior associate in biglaw "hey you've gotta send boundaries! just tell your clients and partners you don't respond to emails outside of normal working! otherwise they'll keep doing it."
im not speaking for lex here. perhaps he disagrees. but i know plenty of professors and they all complain about grade inflation and lowering standards that they have no real power to change.

How about breaking down the assignment so it's more difficult and less efficiency to use AI? E.g., live, in class write down a thesis. Live, in class, write down 3-5 supporting points. Live, in class, write one topic sentence for each of the sections with those 3-5 supporting points. Then, go write the essay.

Are they allowed to use AI to bounce ideas off of? You could say something like, you can talk to a chatbot to improve your understanding and refine your argument but don't turn in words that were written by an LLM. You can even give them a prompt to put in at the beginning of the convo to the effect of, "I'm seeking your help with a paper but I don't want ANY suggestions on wording unless I ask." I've used GPT to edit drafts and it's actually really helpful at talking through ideas – it's even good at it when the material is pretty technical. I always tell it never to suggest wording and to keep the critique conceptual. I've also only gone to it with near-completed drafts; maybe that could be your line? Write the whole thing before you outsource any thinking to AI?
I swear the chatbots are programmed to suggest wording by default as an intentional way to rot away people's brains
