The first part is especially good- does a great job of conveying the feeling in Europe right before WW1. The Germans, French and British were all fiercely patriotic, and everyone had the sense that the battle to decide the fate of their nation (especially France's) would start soon.
Germans bitched about the Versailles treaty after WW1, but they had every intention of imposing terms on France which were so harsh that they would never rise to challenge Germany again, as they did after their 1870 loss. And Germany was determined to start the war ASAP- they felt their military advantage was decreasing with every passing month. So they viewed Franz Ferdinand's assassination as being a welcome pretext. |
