if its all that sets you apart, its worth it
but its saturated as fuck, and yes, these days Ph.D. is required for bio and chem.
masters in those subjects aren't offered at most schools unless you start a Ph.D. and quit.

At my school's OCI, IP folks with science backgrounds fared a lot better on average. Especially the EE/CS kids.
I agree that patent prosecution in chemistry/biology is out of the question without a PhD. But you'd probably have a decent boost for patent litigation, provided you do research and can convince interviewers that you actually know something about it.
