What is it like to attend a TTT? [174]

I’ve been in the most elite private institutions beginning at a very young age, and as such I just don’t know what it’s like to attend a TTT. Are the classes competitive? Do the teaches have prestigious degrees, or did they attend TTTs as well? Do you go to class in jeans and “hoodies,” or do you wear RL Purple Label polos and blazers like elite students? Do the students realize their TTT status, or do they pretend to be smart/important?
I really need these questions answered, as I just don’t know what it’s like to attend public school. Are there a lot of minorities?

Sometimes, we're not even sure whether the work is genuine (or written by somebody else in the style of the alleged author).
Textual critics go through the manuscript history and variations and try to figure out what the author actually wrote, and how the variations/mistakes arose. I came up with an emendation, which means that I read a text, saw something strage, and made a suggestion for what the text really should be. |

This lists all the major manuscript variations and suggestions by previous editors (and this includes editors over the last 2,000 years).
So, making a good suggestions means getting your name on the bottom of the page forever, and, even if you're not right, it'll be on the page (as a suggestion) - and the only way that they'll discover that you're "wrong" is if a text were to somehow appear that were, indisputably, in the hand of the original author. |

Date: April 15th, 2005 5:20 AM Author: coral shrine masturbator In a patronage, a person of a higher social order or rank, for the romans were highly attuned to such social stratifications, would give something to somebody below him. this gift, which does not need to be a physicall good, creates a sense of 'gratia' - favor - in the recipient.
The recipient then feels a sense of gratitude (related to gratia) to the benefactor, and the recipient will continue to 'repay' the benefactor with subsequent gifts or support (e.g. political support).
Let's say that I'm your superior in this sort of environment. I use my influence (auctoritas) in order to give you a really prestigious internship. Your sense of gratitude is immense. Even if you then give me support to get me into a more prestigious office (let's say, for me to become one of the consuls), you still feel as though you are indebted to me because I gave the initial gift.
Now, when I do something for you, it's in your interest to ensure that people are aware of my patronage for you because then people know that you are connected to the elite (it's kind of like being able to name-drop). this ensures that, though you may not have climbed up the social ladder a lot, you are now slightly higher than you were.
So, in Rome, the clients (the recipients of a benefactor's patronage) would give small gifts to the patron in the morning to try to remain on the patron's good side (and to receive continued benefaction). Thus, the initial gift can never be fully repaid. Those of a lower social rung will remain forever ingratiated to the patron of a higher status. |

There is a term, euergetism (it's a Greek word), that captures the sense of giving, but it does not need to occur between social equals.
There is a "mystification of time" when it comes to giving and returning favors/gifts. Seneca wrote about this issue of time. If I give you something, and then you quickly give me something, your gift seems "reified". That is, you thought about what you gave me and, likely, tried to make it something of equal or greater value (so that the gift may accrue an even greater sense of extra-monetary meaning).
If, on the other hand, you accept my gift and wait a long time before giving me a gift, your gift seems genuine - as though you were not trying to simply "repay" me for my gift [there is a different word used for 'repaying' and 'returning'; reddere is an act of fiscal compensation unlike referre]. Thus, the time lapse makes your gift seem more 'spontaneous' and 'voluntary' rather than forced or as though you are trying to pay me back 1-for-1. |
