It's not Fight Club because that whole Film has a lot of memorable parts. The whole intro with Edward Norton and everything Pitt does. Basically the whole film up until project mayhem is quotable. "I haven't been fucked like that since grade school," plus Tyler Durden's famous Gen X monologue.

The Usual suspects has nothing memorable about it other than the ending scene and the soundtrack. Same for movies like A Few Good Men. They really designed some of these to be "watercooler films" built around one memorable scene.

You don’t remember Tim Roth telling him right at the end that he’s the rat and then Keitel’s gun fires off screen before all the guns/cops guns fire and then Buscemi sneaks out? You need to watch it again.

Thought about this one, but saying the ear cutting scene is the whole movie is a gross insult to Keitel and Tim Roth. Also the erasure of Madonna’s big dick is not acceptable.

I feel like there was a series of films in this era that made their run at greatness based on their twist. Shawshank, Usual Suspects, Memento, Fight Club, Se7en, etc.

Some did it better than others. Some hold up great even after you know the twist. Some were great on first watch but don’t hold up now.

I guess I kind of group those all together as single-scene vehicles that I remember fondly because of the first time I saw them.

Heat is just the shootout.

Jerry Maguire is remembered for the crying “you complete me/you had me at hello” nonsense but was really carried for men in the 90s by the Kelly Preston dirty talking sex scene at the very beginning.

ty i must respectfully disagree on both. heat is so long, and has so many good parts. jerry maguire has so many good conversations between cruise and cuba gooding jr that approximate the lawyer/client relationship ("I'm out here for you! You don't know what it's like to be me out here for you. It's an up-at-dawn pride-swallowing siege that I will never fully tell you about! Okay?! Help me help you help me help you.)

Heat is absolutely the shootout and it’s not really debatable. Great movie, but especially because the Pacino Deniro scene was so hyped at the time, and was kind of underwhelming. But really the whole movie just rests on that shootout, which is the greatest shootout of the 90s easily, and maybe of any non-western ever.

100% agree re Jerry Maguire. It’s like the epitome of a Cameron Crowe script, so by definition it will have a litany of scenes that are quotable/memorable pulls on heart strings. The show me the money scene is/was arguably the bigger scene than the you complete me scene, plus the little kid and all his dorky lines and the shoplifting the pootie scene. It’s not close to being a single scene movie.

ty, appreciate your thoughtful take. totally agree shootout is the "best" scene in heat. per comment below, it's just that there are so many good scenes in it overall, it's not like the rest of it is worth skipping.

Yes fully agreed, ie not at all a “can’t remember anything other than one scene” movie, but that scene is the fulcrum for the entire movie.
