I didn't do the math and realize that was the minimum he could spend.
My guess? The apartment in a nice area is a $400 studio. And I'm a little suspicious of the nice area part, since I remember he said that almost none of the girls in his building speak English. He probably spends the rest of the money on food and bus passes - he apparently doesn't have any entertainment costs, and I don't see him being a clothing fanatic.

No way. Apartments in Madison are expensive, especially in nice areas. Most people have roommates to make it more affordable.
edit: I guess he might be able to get an efficiency for around $400/mo as Rowan suggests.

Yeah, I read wrong. I was thinking $666 for an *apartment*. Anything that leaves money for food and other items would have to be very small, I think.
Though it's certainly possible that don is underestimating how much money he spends.

When my boyfriend lived in an okay but not elite neighborhood, he was paying $675 for a one bedroom.
I don't see how he spends so little - I spend about $1500 a month including rent and I thought I was really frugal.

I may have a chance to jump on a rent controlled 1 bedroom (small but sufficient) around Astor and 3rd ave for $1500 a month.
Does that sound like a good deal? I would have preferred finding a place in October, but if I can pay $1500 instead of $2200, it may be worth it.

I put everything on my credit card.
I go out twice a week and spend between $40-80 on booze. I take girls out once or twice a week which is usually around $100 a pop.
I spend 40-60 a week on groceries.
And it seems every month there is some big ticket item that costs several hundred dollars, whether its school books, a trip to the bahamas, a couple of new pairs of shoes, xmas presents, etc. you get the idea.

ohhh yeah bus passes adds another 600 yearly.
electricity i have covered. see above.
shampoo and all that is covered in the food budget. i lump all that together. so are any trips to starbucks or anything like that. i lump it together cuz it all goes on the credit card, and 220 is about my average monthly CC bill.
all told, along with the occassional splurge like an mp3 player, it probably comes out to just under 9k.
i wish it were lower. there is no need to spend 9000 dollars, which is a lot of money, just to support one person. but i am lazy and never cook. i could save a fortune if i cooked myself.
also my rent is kinda high. but it's about the cheapest i could find that wasn't in the ghetto.

"unless you count going to bars as a hobby."
No, I would count that as hanging out with friends.
I would say movies, sports, music, and video games qualify as hobbies though or at least interests, and most young people are into those.
Most people have some kind of own unique hobby though - like they're in a band or they take kung fu or something.

yeah i used to play a ton of basketball. maybe i should get back into that. it's fun and very good for the body. now would be a good time too cuz it's starting to stay light later. i used to meet a lotta friends that way too. and you never have to ask them "so, what do you want to do?" :)
i could never do yoga because i am a big yeti with no flexibility! music, i have no ability re. that. i cant even read music.

Don is one of the few people I know who really seems to lack the capacity to appreciate life. You could probably put the guy in a jail cell and and he'd be content, as long as he could think about the interest accruing on his bank deposits.
