T14 grad, 160k loans, half public at 6.8 (@#$% staffords), half private at anywhere from 5-7%

Making 80k a year - take home is about $4,000/month.

Monthly loan payments are around $2,000. Yeah you read that right. Not eligible for IBR (right on the cusp), not doing govt work so no loan forgiveness. Rent/food/utils etc. about $1,000.

Kill self?

i mean, obviously it would mean putting in a decent amount of hours, but 5 hrs a week at $50/hr cuts your loan payments in half, essentially (ahem..some of the money i made this way might not have made it onto my tax return..ahem..not legal advice)

it's a legitimate strategy if you're willing to work at it and hustle a little. i mean i know you didn't graduate top 25% at a good school to find yourself teaching the lsat, but what else are you going to do to boost your income until the economy turns around?

I would come up with a realistic budget meaning how much you'd spend on "semi-necessities." Personally, I know I'm going to spend a certain amount going to the movies each month, going out, maybe on video games --whatever (a few beers a week in the budget but table service is a luxury).

I would save 90% of the money that isn't within that budget. The rest you can spend on nice electronics, furniture, clothes, whatever.

Well if you made 40k you probably wouldn't have saved much of the money anyway--and the COL for those three years is included in the loans.

man, wtf.

4000. take away 1k for rent, etc. 800 for misc. shit, eating out. that leaves 2200. put 1500 down on loans. save around 700. once you hit 6 months of savings, plow that 7 into loans.

totally doable.

"STFU" - doing fine, can save/spend $1k a month, better off than a lot of people

tbf, $1k/mth in "savings" is like half of the "unlocked" money you would have per mth if you were some random MRI Tech with a community college degree.

It'd be pretty easy to have about $2500 in disposable income/mth as a young, single community college grad in the medical field.

have you done this? how do you get the multiple lenders to work together?

not all 160k is eligible for IBR - that's federal only. i have something like 75k federal loans, rest are private (and on a 10 year repayment plan that can't be changed)
