I was reading through the amicus briefs filed on behalf of Grutter in Grutter v. Bollinger and came across this nugget:
"Moreover, while grade-point average and test scores may play a significant role in the admissions process, they do not infallibly predict law school performance, let alone career contributions. For example, at Columbia Law School, two years in a row, the top student in the graduating class had been admitted from the wait list. In another year, the editor-in-chief of the Columbia Law Review was admitted from the wait list. In yet a third year, a student admitted to Columbia from the wait list the day before classes began was later selected by a Justice of this Court as a law clerk."

That's true. I'm only reading the brief to argue against its justification for affirmative action, and there certainly are plenty of holes.
But the main point is, I'm trying to bring hope to people on waitlists. You have completely ruined my efforts to spread cheer. Bah humbug.

It was from an amicus brief filed by the Association of American Law Schools. If you are so inclined, you can read it here: http://supreme.lp.findlaw.com/supreme_court/briefs/02-241/02-241.mer.ami.aals.pdf
I would assume they knew who was on the waitlist because at graduation the kid stood up on stage, danced, screamed "And you suckers didn't want to let me in?! PWNED!" and then pointed to his crotch.

it's nice to know that they will forever be branded as wait-listers: especially by a brief to the supreme court

It sounded kind of like the Boston College (I think?) rejection letter, where they say that you *may* still go on to have a good career.
"Don't worry waitlist people! There is some hope for success in your future!"
