It's not like corporations where people care about their philanthropy. Most people don't even know what Sidley Austin is, much less whether they help some people on asylum cases.

it's important to appear to be committed to pro bono for recruiting purposes -- especially for attracting girls and ttt minorities. these types need to be sold on some bullshit that the firm is humane and compassionate.

A lot of them do legal work on the philanthropic causes of wealthy clients, in order to build a stronger relationship with the client.

The overwhelming majority of pro-bono work is nothing at all like this.

I didn't say the majority, but a decent percentage is.

The other reason firms care is for publicity: awards, rankings, etc.

Not even a decent percentage.

Pro Bono work at big law firms comes from no name individuals who contact organizations like Legal Aid and Lawyers Alliance. These organizations have relationships with big law firms and direct the work to the firms to work on.

I'm not just talking about individuals. I mean corporate clients as well.

I've done plenty of that type of pro bono work, and I know certain firms, and certain offices of firms, that do a lot of it as well.

My point was that at least one reason to do pro bono is for service to existing clients. I wouldn't say it's the main reason by any means, but it's there and people don't generally think about it.
