Why did Hitler get off so easily for his role in the Beer Hall Putsch?

He was sentenced to five years in prison for High Treason. He had a knack for taking huge gambles that, when they weren't massive successes (e.g. Poland/France), they were disasters wherein he was punished with a slap on the wrist and a 'boys will be boys' lecture, when he could've just as easily been executed.
Meanwhile, when he tried to strive earnestly in his artistic endeavors, he was told that he sucked every step of the way, stricken wit ignominy, and banished from the School unceremoniously. There are Art Majors with superb GPAs out there who'd undoubtedly kill to have Hitler's talent (even though he sucked compared to a legit artist, IRL art school is lolworthy if it's not some Good one).
