it's surprising that this sort of thing doesn't happen *more* often. there are a LOT of mentally ill losers who have nothing going for them and no hope of ever living a meaningful life
under these circumstances, it's actually "rational" for them to do something like a mass shooting in order to assert their will-to-power and give their existence some kind of meaning. he more or less explicitly reasons this out in the "manifesto" above. this guy wasn't even that "crazy" really, just a human being responding to the circumstances around him and the incentives facing him |

this guy wasn't acting out of resentment at all. he ended up doing what he did because his brain figured that it was the best he could do. in the video/writings he left behind, he explicitly talked about how he thought that doing a school shooting would be cool as hell (paraphrasing) and that it would make him feel awesome and people would notice him on his way out
like i said, it's surprising that this sort of thing doesn't happen more often. i think it's pretty noteworthy that most people who commit these kinds of acts of public violence for the sake of violence do it out of resentment or because their brain has become genuinely convinced that they're doing it on behalf of an ideology or for others
it's very rare that someone goes out and kills people because they just think that it will look cool and feel good. i'm not sure that it has happened once since columbine, "the first" school shooting of the modern era. and i think that this sort of thing is going to become more common, for the same reason that every other meme has become more common: because of the hyper-connectivity of the internet hivemind |
