After a semester of ls, I've discovered that the games section is fucking retarded and inapplicable to anything you do in ls, and the nitpicky logical reasoning really only applies to statute reading. There should be two reading comp sections and one LR section, and that's it. Games should be excised entirely.

lol you must have done poorly if you can't see how the skills the logical reasoning sections test are relevant to reading cases.

counterargument: reading cases is unimportant, the exam is like a logic game with a far more complicated set of rules, so an LG master can break median simply by showing up with a decent outline (s)he's looked over.

I agree. I think RC and LR are much more applicable. I was surprised how much the LSAT actually relates to the type of reasoning we do in law school... it's quite relevant. The people who say the LSAT doesn't accurately measure abilities in law school or how well you will do in law school.... I think are those who just did poorly on the LS. It's entirely relevant, but LG much less so. You can synthesize rules, etc. from logical reasoning as well.

How does LG relate to upper level courses? I'm a 1L and not sure... I would still think even if it does... that LR and RC would be much more applicable for interpretation of statutes, etc.

Not everyone knows that the LGB is as good as it is. To be fair, though, my criticism would have been more appropriate ten years ago, when it wasn't trivially easy for a smart person to figure out how to do well on the test.

right, that's why I said it would have been more appropriate 10 years ago.

Still, it seems silly to test whether people can find and use third party strategies to do well on a section of the test. Why not eliminate it altogether?

yeah I'm one of them. To do well requires practice + innate capabilities obviously... but I think to get 165+ and a good score on logic games, it rests moreso on the latter. A mediocre student with a LGB still won't improve much, I'd think. It's the most difficult section, objectively... (although RC can be difficult as well, but most intelligent arts majors would find it pretty easy, I'd imagine, and doesn't require much studying. LG is the opposite..)

buying the lgb takes several minutes online. the lgb can be assimilated over the course of a few hours each weekend for couple months. the latter is possible for a liberal arts student at a state school.

The point is that you're testing your logical reasoning skills.... I can see the point of LG but not necessarily the direct relevance to law school courses. I doubt I'd ever have to use LG reasoning for something like con. law, for instance. Or even torts. Maybe contracts, at best.

But many people have difficulty with LG... you are likely good at math/stats/economics, if you had so little difficulty with it - those types of people (from what I've heard and just my own intuition..) tend to do best at it. And engineering students as well. My arts friends struggled most with this section.

the problem with LG is that it's the easiest section to prep for and improve upon. improvements with LR and RC are harder to come by and are more in line with natural ability, especially the latter section.

I don't know if that's true... well, yes I improved in logic games but not that much. I used LGB as well. LG was probably the section I improved on most... LR I hardly studied and got almost 100% on... but the first few times were brutal (I think because of the time limit and I was overthinking things.) I still found LG by far, the most difficult section even with LGB. And a few of my friends did as well... it's not the easiest section to prep for, but improvements may come the easiest for most people.

By the time that someone has decided that s/he would like to take the LSAT, s/he has already taken the SAT.

There seems to be no really good reason that explains why anyone preparing for the LSAT should be caught with their pants down unaware of the fact that there is a booming test prep industry that exists, and is there only because it continues to earn a profit by helping test takers achieve their highest possible score.

Its existence is not mystical knowledge nor does it seem a requirement that one should have to work any longer than a single, eight hour shift at, for instance, some silly job, earning $5/hour, if he wishes to acquire the choicest prep materials for his own use.

I thought that your argument was that,

because (aspect) A (from the LSAT) does not test for (some) skill set B (applicable to practice in law school)

therefore,

--> A should be dropped from the LSAT

the ability to learn the process required for the logic games and then apply that process in a limited time environment is very much what you do in law school. You learn a process for analyzing fact patterns and applying an area of law, and then you apply that process to a fact pattern.

If we didn't have the prep industry, then the games section would be close to useless because nobody would finish and most would get all but 1 or 2 wrong. But, since everyone practices, the logic games weeds out those people who are intellectually incapable of learning the games' process and then applying that process quickly.
