no, lit, which is why it is an even bigger deal. this isn't just some cyclical downturn due to ITE, it is a fundamental shift in biglaw. basically the biglaw model is failing for run of the mill firms doing typical lit work and there arent enough rainmakers bringing in business to feed everyone, but a fuckload of grinder service partners making $$$$$$$

This. If you're a law student you need to choose corporate. All you do in lit these days is wonder where the work is.

cr. pretty much there is no reason for a company being sued for tens of millions of dollars to use anyone but the very best. this leaves TTTs like Stroock out in the cold, paying biglaw salaries and requiring 2000 hours but not having clients any longer willing to pay those rates

lol. The shift is in technology. Junior associates used to do doc review and little else. Today the 1st level reviews are all done by computer. You used to have 20 dudes prepping for a 26(f) conference. Today its 2 dudes and one of them likely is in IT and is not a lawyer. You need a whole lot less juniors. This does not mean there is less litigation. There is actually more litigation, but you don't need warm bodies in mass to do it.

I agree about the technology but there is also less longterm high stakes litigation. The problem is that we have had a stagnant economy for 5 years now and big corps are still in cost cutting mode in the US. The growth is all abroad, at least outside of IP lit.

close but not quite.

Baker Mac SD folded back in February, but they were getting buttfucked hard by attrition and low work for a couple years before that. They were a small satellite office that grew recklessly before collapsing again, and only had 8 attys by the end.

The other one you're thinking of is Luce Forward, the true hometown brand-name SD firm. They got bought/absorbed completely into McKenna. Luce's foremost problem wasn't a work slowdown; they invested the partnership's money into hotel and real estate deals that went belly-up (I believe they were heavily into the W, which went bankrupt in summer 2009 or 2010) and faced a liquidity crisis they couldn't quite pull out of.

Bro obviously some run of the mill amlaw 100 firms will be doing better this year, but that is largely a result of the rainmakers having good years. Firms with models like DLA Piper, Baker Mackenzie, Mayer Brown etc... are effectively failing. Top tier shit like Irell/MTO/Keker, V20, the Boies and Susman firms, will still work.

run of the mill biglaw lit is dying.

we are too expensive for what we do to begin with, we are all at these massive bloated firms where we bill the shit out of clients to pay our armies of service partners $350k to do work midlevels could do.

increasingly, we are losing the big clients where we can grind our 8-10 hours of billables a day, and are getting put a bunch of low level shit, like seriously low level-i have cases now where the client is getting sued for $1MM. LOL. it makes no fucking sense for me and a partner to bill the fuck out of a client like this for a case like this. but we are caught between trying to make 2000 hours and trying to keep clients happy

A "service partner" is a partner that is a glorified associate. In other words, this individual is very good at what he/she does but does not have a large enough of a book of business to become an equity partner. So, the equity partner gives work to a service partner/senior associate, who then distributes the work among the lower associates. Because the work is drying up, however, the service partners are keeping more and more of the billable work (as a result, there is fewer hours trickling down to lower associates).

You don't. No one has a book of business as an associate. Almost no partners have books of business.

And tbf if you have to ask, you won't ever be building one up. It's solely the ability of the beswagged.

You're confusing a service partner and equity status. The first is defined by whether they bring in business and the second by their status in the partnership. A service partner can be an equity partner and often is.

What's the incentive for a firm to make someone an equity partner with no book of business? If you are so good that people actually know about you, then you would have a book of business.

If you don't, some other firm might if the person is good. It's not at all uncommon for someone to have a very strong reputation with clients at that point but not be originator/proliferator on the matters at the moment - but the expectation is that in the future they will be.

They're trying to project future business generation (and maintenance of existnig clients as other partners move on), not basing solely on current.

Yea, this is my understanding as well. My current firm is now taking on various types of litigation that we previously did not take on. In addition, the clients at my previous firm (BigLaw) are coming over to this smaller firm for more and more of their legal work. (Note: I am not in litigation.)

Has the high leverage doc review model of "litigation" started to dry up? IIRC that was the bulk of their lit practice, so if this is moving to cheaper firms, not surprised they might be cutting back.

most of the "bet the company" work that sustained the biglaw model is moving to a few select firms, and ttt firms like Stroock, DLA Piper, etc... cannot compete for that business anymore. Yet they are paying market rates for associates.

MBS lit is drying up. I have no clue if Latham had a toe ion the MBS pool though. This will hurt biglaw in general. We need another financial scandal to rile up the mass tort lawyers.

Not to mention staff. Guess how many partners they kicked out. FUCKING GUESS.

I met recently with a couple of partners at one of the top firms in major market. One that's supposed to be healthy. I was surprised when they casually mentioned delaying first years a few months. Asked if it was another economic slowdown. They said no, more about too much competition, being too expensive and losing biz to smaller cheaper firms, etc. they were pretty non chalant about it since they were boomers who already got theirs.

I think so many biglaw senior associate defectors have opened up their own small shops and slashed their prices that its starting to hurt. Why go to a big firm and pay 2x as much when you know you will be getting the same quality of work.

Not only this, but greedy partners have raised firm rates so high that it's impossible to bring in those smaller clients. A small fund that does $5-30m deals isn't going to use a law firm where the attorneys are all $500-1000 per hour. This has the dual effect of making it hard for senior associates to bring in work and limiting the types and number of clients a firm has.

-isn't corporate work slow? not a lot of dealflow and ibanks are in the shitter

-figured there'd still be a lot of DOJ/SEC investigations keeping white collar ppl busy

-ip lit is booming, but that's its own niche

fyi, I know a junior who lateraled to latham recently in SF/SV from another V10, for general lit

I also had a lateral offer there for IP in the past year. Didn't take it cuz their IP group is really in flux and just starting out. They've never really recovered from losses to Quinn and K&E a few years ago

Can't speak to how it's doing now. General lit folks at my V20 seem reasonably busy

Also, surprised they are slow relative to headcount. Figured they never made up ground for the massive ITE cuts when they went from 2300 lawyers to 1700

Latham is moving offices in SD but I haven't heard anything about layoffs.

They're consolidating their downtown office and Del Mar office into one. Moving into a brand new building in Del Mar, supposedly with a bunch of floors.

This isn't that suprising, a variety of firms have either been moving into Del Mar offices or closing their Del Mar offices and moving the whole thing downtown. However, it seems the general trend is to move to Del Mar as it's a more central hub to biz in San Diego as well as North County, and closer to Orange County/LA.

Plus most partners live in Del Mar/La Jolla and that extra 15 minute drive must make them ir8.

There's a pretty mad scramble for the guest offices in the North County offices on Fridays when the partners don't want to drive downtown.
