Let's see... Outrageous demands? Check. Ineffective arguments? Check. Stupid analogies and/or hypotheticals? Check. Flaming for the sake of flaming? Check.
Throw in wearing a suit and the general toolish attitude and I don't see how you can say this wasn't inappropriate or at the very least gunnersish.

Oh I completely agree, I think the profs are in the wrong for moving off-campus, especially if they're moving it to a church with bad facilities. My problem here is that this guy's speech was way more toolish and confrontational than it had to be -- I mean come on, did he *really* need to go and say that profs who moved class off campus should be forced to go on sabbatical or otherwise be punished?
He didn't really help his cause at all, and based on the blog post from one of the profs who was there all he did was piss the leftist pro-union profs off and make them think that all the students who are criticizing their actions are self-centered douchebags.

However you must see the video... Until I saw the video, I 100% supported the student and thought the prof was out of line on the blog. Seeing the video changed everything, I can completely see where the prof was coming from.

I did not know it was possible to create laws withouth politics. Hell, I m going to law school partly due to my love of politics, and the fact that I wish to run for public office in the future.
Thank you, sir douchebag< for showing me the error of my ways!

Funny, those two lines were what really caught my attention as well. I especially like the "your duty is to teach the law" part--like the law is a multiplication table.
Of course, I find it equally amusing that some guy that thinks he's a football player was sitting right behind him.

A prepared speech at an informal town hall meeting?
A suit when it's what, 70 degrees outside and everyone else is dressed casually?

A Town hall meetings are never informal in my view.
B He wasn't the only person in business attire.
C He said he was speaking for a group, as such, notes expressing a broad view seem appropriate to me.

A-Asinine
B-Everyone else is dressed how they would normally dressed. The guy in the gold tie looks like a dean and dressed as such. The older prof types had dress shirts and slacks, as professors do. The students were dressed casually, as most students do, and a few tools wore business casual, which correlates to the general percentage of tools in a law school setting.
C-If you have someone representing a group, find a good speaker. FI he wanted to complain formally, he and the other Federalist types could have written and signed a petition. Having this deuche make one point fifty different ways while stuttering the whole time was ridiculous.

A Fuck You
B He did not have a monocle, cane, or top hat.
C I never said he was a great public speaker, hence his reliance on the notes.

A-The very essense of a town hall meeting is allowing anyone to gather and expess a view. Attaching a dress code defeats the purpose of even having the meeting.
B-The point is that he acted toolish, not that he is the most toolish person to have ever lived.
C-If a group of law students gather and decide to put forth a viewpoint, one would think they would 1-know the audience and forum 2-find an effective and/or persuasive speaker.

Nice pants and a button-down shirt would be fine--it's not like he was there as an elected representative of a student group.
I've never been particularly fond of the "it's not just me who feels this way, lots of other people do too" approach to argument. It's unprovable and doesn't add anything to the substance of the argument. It also raises the question as to who those other people were and why weren't they there saying the same thing? If anything, it creates the inference that the subject wasn't as important to them.
Notes are fine. This guy was reading a prepared text verbatim. Big difference.

The major problem is he didn't dress accordingly.
Everyone else in the room was dressed casually. Further, rather than look like a lawyer and wear a navy or gray suit, this tool walks in like he came from a Milan fashion show.

I don't think anyone here is taking issue with his views. I don't really know much about the situation, but I'll assume for the sake of argument that he's entirely correct. What we're going off on is (1) how completely toolish he was, and (2) how said toolishness weakened his argument. If he were a litigator, his client would be in trouble.
Perhaps the suit was for something else, though. We could give him the benefit of the doubt on that one.

Yeah, both analogies sucked.
But then again, the prof made his analogy on his feet, while the student's analogy was part of a prepared speech. So I'd be willing to cut the prof a bit more slack in that area.

I thought his speech was over the top and demonstrated some immaturity.
But I have no problem with him reading a prepared statement. If he truly is speaking on behalf of other students, I would endorse them getting together and approving a statement so that it is reasonably representative of their views.
And I have no problem with him wearing a suit. Prior to the town-hall meeting, you don't know how other people are going to dress. He might have reasonably expected that if he is going to take the floor with a microphone and read a strongly worded statement, he ought to look professional. I may not have gone as far as a suit, but some higher level of dress is clearly appropriate.

This whole situation just shows why liberals are so ineffective. They completely lack any conviction to their beliefs. Their only willing to act on them when they are the ones not paying the price. It's very easy to be rightous when you shift the burden of your convictions onto others. The profs should either join the picket or STFU and just accept they're part of corporate america, not the idealist outsiders they hold themselves out to be.

If he had said, "We pay you to be here from 10-11:30. You should be here during that time," it would have been ok, save the suit.
But he acted like Horowitz for 90 percent of the speech, which is ironically a political statement.

I think the fact that is was prepared showed more guts. He must have known it was going to be a controversial position and that he is now on a lot of professor's shit list (as much as they promise to be fair, it's not humanly possibly after someone called you out at a public meeting). To agree to convey your (and others) opinion despite this is quite courageous.
However, if he agreed to make the speech to make a name for himslef or because he likes attention, than it shows douchiness and a complete lack of awareness.

Whoever posted this = 180:
"This whole saga is hilarious and sad at the same time.
To the professors: Please just take pity on these poor students and move your classes back to campus. They pay a ridiculous amount of money for a degree that will not even land the vast majority of them a market biglaw job, so you could at least demonstrate benevolence by making their time in law school as painless as possible.
The pompous, self-glorification is astounding. Please do not engage in such dissembling by claiming that UM is some sort of "academic community". You are operating in the business of churning out unprestigious JDs. Admit that to yourselves, and stop making students suffer for your petty little causes.
The student body is made up of individuals who ended up with 155 LSATs because they couldn't read a paragraph and answer questions about it. Not exactly the cream of the crop. Anyone with a legitimate academic bent will be at one of about 15 law schools. This self-sorting is doubly ironic, because the people with 155 LSATs are the same ones who aren't intelligent enough to do an expected value calculation on paying $100K in tuition for a degree that will only be worthwhile for the top 10% of the class.
To the innocent little girl who is "terrified" when free market values are espoused: I'd imagine there is a strong correlation between not understanding capitalism and ending up at a TTT law school."

Are the classes being held off campus because some profs do not wish to cross a picket line? If so, some sanctions are in order. The dean of the school (assuming he's not also off campus) should act. The prof can join the picket line after he's done his duty and show solidarity that way.

Yea that is the basic idea. I'm at UMiami for undergrad and the same shit is going on. Some of the employees of UNICCO (our janitorial/ maintenance companies) are striking and attempting to form a union through the SEIU. A lot of professors have refused to hold classes within the classrooms. Professors are wearing t-shirts proclaiming "SUPPORT THE FACULTY STRIKE" (I guess they are striking too), etc. etc. I've had classes outside which isn't that bad since the weather has been nice. This has, of course, brought out all the old hippie professors who are having a flashback to Vietnam.
There was a march with a few hundred people last week in support for the workers. There was an email from the administration that went out campus-wide this past Wed. stating that while the university supports free speech and that there should be no stifling of it, that there is still a duty to teach. This didn't change much since my Thurs. class was still outside. The bright side is that our professors have informed us that we cannot be counted as being absent if we don't show up to the out of classroom locations.
OTOH, next week is Spring Break and I'll be curious to see if the "politically active" kids here still remember to poor workers while they are in the Caribbean.

1. Human nature: no matter what professors say, some will hold it against students who do not show up to class... and this will directly effect student in classes with subjective class participation grading.
2. Coerced speech: students who go to class, but do not agree with the professors political views, will be seen as supporting the professors' political views, both because professors will explicitly or implicitly use their students' attendance as confirmation of their views, and because students do not have to go, some will not go, and therefore some observers will assume that those who go support the professor.
3. Hardship on innocent parties: professors may take up political views, and forebear pleasures and social standing in pursuit of those beliefs, but they should not be allowed to pursue their beliefs at the cost of others, be they students, janitors, or disinterested third parties. Political discourse is not justifiied when it infringes on the rights of others. Clearly, the students paid for the right to attend class - in general, except for extreme and short term situations - at the campus, and to move classes off campus is to infringe upon that right.
The suit was cool, having notes in hand was ok, reading off of the notes for 5 minutes was retarded, and only less retarded than most of the professors who spoke. Alas, I remember why I hate law school.

You haven't shown how. In fact, most people on this thread that have attacked the guy have attacked him for being a douchey messenger, rather than attacking the douchey message itself.
He had no class and no flare (sp?), but he is undoubtedly correct. The only things his opponents revealed in the meeting were their own flakey viewpoints, probably moreso than the douche revealed his douchiness.
That you have simply attacked the messenger by alleging that both his balls and brains are lightweight reveals your politics in the same way.
His message might have been attacked and the messenger himself might have been perforated, but his argument sure as hell wasn't. In fact, noone even attempted to really deal with the argument itself except the first prof who thought it would be cool to just run circles around the guy intellectually without really taking on the substance of his conclusion.
