chilmata:

How many credible stories are there of people who have died and have been brought back to life and then they told stories about the afterlife? And how many of those stories have similarities?

CHATGPT:

There are thousands of documented accounts of near-death experiences, including more than 100 cases recorded in prospective medical studies involving patients who suffered cardiac arrest and were resuscitated.

And yes, there are remarkable similarities between their stories. Researchers have actually measured how frequently people describe the same experiences.

The important distinction is that we have strong evidence these experiences occur. We do not yet have scientific proof that they represent consciousness surviving death.

1. HOW MANY CREDIBLE CASES ARE THERE?

5,000+ firsthand accounts collected in major near-death experience archives.

11 prospective cardiac-arrest studies identified in a 2024 scientific review.

The archive reports are largely self-submitted. The clinical studies document actual cardiac arrests and subsequent interviews.

Three particularly important studies:

Netherlands, 2001 (The Lancet): 344 resuscitated patients interviewed. 62 reported near-death experiences (18%).

International AWARE, 2014: 101 detailed interviews. About 9% reported near-death experiences.

AWARE II, 2023: 28 interviewed patients. Six (21%) reported transcendent experiences.

Across studies, roughly 10–20% of interviewed cardiac-arrest survivors report near-death experiences, although rates vary depending on the definitions and methods used.

2. HOW MANY DESCRIBE THE SAME THINGS?

A fascinating 2017 study published in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience analyzed 154 near-death narratives and measured their similarities.

Here is what researchers found:

Overwhelming peace: 80% (123 of 154)

Bright light: 69% (106 of 154)

Encountering people or spirits: 64% (99 of 154)

Out-of-body experience: 53% (81 of 154)

Traveling through a tunnel: 47% (73 of 154)

Point of no return: 40% (62 of 154)

Life review: 16% (25 of 154)

Source: Temporality of Features in Near-Death Experience Narratives (2017). These were retrospective narratives, not 154 independently verified cardiac-arrest cases.

That is substantial overlap.

But here's another interesting finding: although people frequently experienced the same elements, they did not necessarily experience them in the same order.

Only six of the 154 narratives contained the familiar four-part sequence of leaving the body, entering a tunnel, seeing light, and feeling peace in that exact order.

3. WHAT MAKES THESE ACCOUNTS ESPECIALLY INTERESTING?

Some patients reported observing their medical resuscitation from outside their bodies. Others described meeting deceased relatives, feeling extraordinary love, or being told they had to return.

The 2014 AWARE study included a case in which a patient's recollection of resuscitation events was independently corroborated.

But in the more recent AWARE II study, no participant correctly identified the hidden visual target used to test apparent out-of-body awareness. One identified an auditory stimulus.

That distinction matters.

A person can have no detectable pulse and still be successfully resuscitated. That does not mean irreversible brain death occurred, and researchers generally cannot determine the precise moment an experience was formed.

4. COULD THE SIMILARITIES BE EVIDENCE OF AN AFTERLIFE?

There are two serious interpretations.

The possibility of an afterlife: People from different countries, religions, and backgrounds describe strikingly similar experiences, sometimes with profound and lasting changes in their attitudes toward life and death. Those similarities deserve investigation.

The neurological explanation: Human brains share much of the same architecture. Oxygen deprivation, changes in neural activity, altered perception, and memory formation around resuscitation might produce overlapping experiences. Some features of NDEs can also be reproduced in other altered states of consciousness.

Neither explanation has settled the question. Cultural differences also matter, particularly in whom people believe they encountered.

MY CONCLUSION

Three things are reasonably well established.

1. Many people have genuine, vivid near-death experiences after documented medical emergencies.

2. Their accounts share recurring features at rates much higher than isolated anecdotes would suggest.

3. No scientific study has conclusively demonstrated that these experiences take place after irreversible death or prove an afterlife exists.

The question I find most interesting isn't why hundreds of people describe a bright light. It's whether any person has accurately reported information they could not possibly have perceived through ordinary means while being resuscitated.

That is the distinction between an extraordinary subjective experience and potentially verifiable evidence of consciousness operating independently of the brain.

And there are some particularly interesting cases involving precisely that question.

chilmata:

Tell me about them.

CHATGPT:

There are several cases that are genuinely difficult to explain. Some involve people describing conversations or objects they supposedly couldn't have seen or heard while unconscious. Others involve people claiming to have learned that someone died before anyone told them.

I found five particularly interesting cases, including one published in a medical journal in 2026.

What matters is separating what the patient reported, what someone independently confirmed, and what remains unexplained.

1. THE MAN WHO DESCRIBED HIS OWN RESUSCITATION

2014 | AWARE study | Published in Resuscitation

This is one of the strongest cases because it came from a prospective scientific investigation, rather than someone coming forward years later.

Dr. Sam Parnia and his colleagues studied 2,060 cardiac-arrest events across 15 hospitals.

One patient, a 57-year-old man, reported leaving his body while doctors were trying to revive him.

He described watching medical personnel working on his body. He also recalled specific sounds from the resuscitation equipment.

The researchers compared his account with the actual resuscitation events and found that details corresponded to what happened.

They estimated that the recalled events occurred during a period of approximately three minutes when the patient was undergoing cardiac arrest and resuscitation.

Why this matters: The research team documented accurate recollections during a medical emergency in which ordinary awareness would not be expected.

The limitation: There was no continuous EEG establishing that his brain had stopped functioning. Nor did he identify one of the hidden visual targets designed to test whether someone could actually see from outside their body.

The case supports the possibility of awareness during cardiac arrest. It does not establish that consciousness left his body.

2. THE MAN WHO KNEW EXACTLY WHERE HIS DENTURES WERE

2001 | Netherlands | Published in The Lancet

This one is extraordinary because the witness was a nurse.

A 44-year-old man was brought to a hospital following cardiac arrest. He was unconscious and required extensive resuscitation.

While preparing to intubate him, a nurse removed his dentures and placed them on a medical equipment cart.

The man remained comatose.

More than a week later, the nurse encountered him again.

The patient recognized him immediately and said he knew the nurse had taken his dentures.

He subsequently described watching the medical team from a position above his body, including details of the resuscitation.

The nurse reported this case to cardiologist Pim van Lommel, who included it in his landmark 2001 research.

Why this matters: The nurse personally witnessed the events the patient later described. The account was included in a major peer-reviewed medical publication.

The limitation: The patient's experience was reconstructed afterward. There was no contemporaneous recording of exactly what he perceived or when.

The patient's recognition of the nurse is intriguing. Whether he acquired that information through ordinary sensory processing or some other mechanism remains unresolved.

3. THE WOMAN WHO DESCRIBED AN ARGUMENT DURING HER COMA

2026 | Italy | Published in Rivista di Psichiatria

This is one of the newest medically published cases.

A 25-year-old woman suffered devastating head injuries in a high-speed automobile accident. She arrived at the hospital in a deep coma, with a Glasgow Coma Scale score of 3.

She remained in a medically induced coma for approximately 20 days.

After recovering the ability to communicate, she described an experience of floating above her body.

But she didn't just describe a tunnel or a bright light.

She described a heated argument between a doctor and a paramedic during her ambulance transport. She also described the paramedic sustaining a minor injury to his nose.

Both medical professionals subsequently corroborated that incident, according to the published case report.

She also described surgical equipment, medical personnel, and fragments of conversations from her treatment.

Interestingly, her experience was frightening rather than peaceful. Yet afterward, her doctors reported profound positive changes in her outlook on life.

Why this matters: The argument and injury are specific, independently checkable events, not generic descriptions of a hospital room.

The limitation: This was a retrospective case report. The published account doesn't establish exactly when the memories formed or independently exclude every ordinary route by which the information might have reached her.

Still, I think this one deserves further investigation.

4. PAM REYNOLDS, THE WOMAN WHOSE BRAIN WAS DELIBERATELY SHUT DOWN

1991 | Arizona | Investigated by cardiologist Michael Sabom

Pam Reynolds underwent extraordinary surgery to repair a dangerous brain aneurysm.

Surgeons lowered her body temperature dramatically, stopped her heart, and temporarily stopped blood circulation to her brain.

During part of the operation, her EEG became flat.

Afterward, she described apparently leaving her body and observing the operation.

She accurately described an unusual surgical saw, comparing its appearance to an electric toothbrush. She also recalled a discussion about the small size of blood vessels in her leg.

Those details corresponded to the surgical equipment and events.

The problem is the timing.

Her reported observations of the saw occurred before the period of complete circulatory arrest, while she was under general anesthesia.

That leaves open possibilities involving residual hearing or anesthesia awareness.

Some investigators dispute whether those mechanisms adequately explain her account, particularly because she had earphones delivering loud monitoring clicks. But the claim that she visually observed surgery while her brain activity was demonstrably absent is not established.

It is an important case, but its popular retellings sometimes overstate what the medical record proves.

5. MARIA AND THE TENNIS SHOE OUTSIDE THE HOSPITAL

1970s | Seattle | Reported by hospital social worker Kimberly Clark Sharp

Maria suffered a cardiac arrest at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

After being resuscitated, she told social worker Kimberly Clark Sharp that she had floated outside her body and observed the hospital.

Then she described something peculiar.

A tennis shoe sitting on a third-floor window ledge.

She reportedly described its location, a worn area near the toe, and a shoelace tucked beneath the heel.

Sharp went looking.

She eventually found a shoe matching the description, in the location Maria had identified.

According to Sharp, some details could not be seen from the interior window where she found it.

Why this matters: Unlike describing doctors administering CPR, describing a shoe outside the building seems unrelated to anything the patient would ordinarily encounter during treatment.

The limitation: The original event was not documented in a contemporaneous controlled study. Later investigators questioned whether the shoe could have been observed normally.

Sharp strongly disputed those criticisms in a 2007 published response, but there is no contemporaneous, independently preserved record of Maria's initial description.

A striking story. Weaker documentation.

6. THE PATIENT WHO REPORTEDLY MET A NURSE WHO HAD JUST DIED

Historical clinical account | Recounted by psychiatrist Bruce Greyson

This one is different. It involves information about a death that the patient supposedly had no way of knowing.

Dr. Bruce Greyson described a young man hospitalized with severe pneumonia who repeatedly stopped breathing and required resuscitation.

One of his nurses, Anita, told him she was taking a long weekend away.

While she was gone, he experienced another life-threatening respiratory arrest.

During his near-death experience, he reportedly encountered Anita in a beautiful landscape.

She told him to return to life. She also asked him to tell her parents that she loved them and was sorry about wrecking a red MGB sports car.

When he recovered, he tried to relay the message to another nurse.

According to Greyson's account, Anita's parents had surprised her with a red MGB for her birthday. She had crashed the vehicle and died shortly before the patient's experience.

Greyson recounted the story publicly in a 2023 University of Virginia interview.

Now, imagine that account is accurate in every detail.

How did the patient know?

That's a much more difficult question than why someone saw a light or experienced a feeling of peace.

The limitation: I could verify Greyson's published retelling, not a contemporaneous set of records independently establishing exactly when the patient described the accident and what information he could have received.

That prevents treating it as scientific proof.

WHAT HAPPENED WHEN SCIENTISTS TRIED TO TEST THIS DIRECTLY?

The most important follow-up is the 2023 AWARE II study.

Researchers placed hidden visual images and played auditory stimuli during cardiac-arrest resuscitations. The purpose was straightforward: determine whether patients could later identify information presented while they were clinically unresponsive.

0 patients correctly identified a hidden visual image.

1 of 28 interviewed patients identified an auditory stimulus.

The study enrolled 567 cardiac-arrest patients, but only 28 ultimately completed interviews. Six described transcendent recalled experiences of death.

The visual test did not produce the evidence researchers were looking for. But the study also found periods of EEG activity compatible with consciousness during prolonged CPR.

That matters because a person can look completely unconscious while their brain is still capable of some activity.

WHICH CASES CARRY THE MOST WEIGHT?

For me, the 2014 AWARE case and the 2026 Italian case are especially interesting because they contain specific recollections examined in medical research.

But the evidence still stops short of proving consciousness existed independently of the brain.

There is another category that might be even more compelling: people who report meeting deceased relatives they didn't know had died, or relatives whose identities they supposedly never knew in life.

Those cases test something different. Rather than asking whether a patient somehow heard a conversation during surgery, they ask whether the patient acquired information that was not available to them at all.

And that is where this subject becomes particularly interesting.

chilmata:

Tell me about those.

CHATGPT:

These are some of the most fascinating cases in near-death research, because they involve something more specific than seeing a bright light or feeling overwhelming peace.

People reportedly encountered someone who had died, even though they had no idea the person was dead. In some cases, they didn't even know the person existed.

Psychiatrist Bruce Greyson studied these accounts at the University of Virginia. His 2010 paper, Seeing Dead People Not Known to Have Died, examined three categories:

1. People who saw someone they believed was still alive.

2. People who saw someone who had died only moments earlier.

3. People who encountered deceased relatives they had never met.

Researchers sometimes call these Peak in Darien experiences. Greyson considered them particularly important because they challenge the explanation that people simply see the deceased relatives they expect or hope to see.

Here are six cases worth examining.

1. THE DYING WOMAN WHO SAW HER SISTER VIDA

1924 | England | Reported by physician Florence Barrett

A woman was dying after childbirth. Her family gathered around her, and her physician, Florence Barrett, was present.

Suddenly, the woman's expression changed. She appeared to see something beautiful, including her deceased father.

Then she noticed someone else.

She said:

"Oh, why there is Vida."

Vida was her sister.

What the woman didn't know was that Vida had died approximately three weeks earlier.

Her family had deliberately withheld that information because she was gravely ill.

The woman died shortly afterward.

This account was documented by the attending physician and later published by physicist William Barrett in his 1926 book Death-Bed Visions.

The obvious question is why she would be surprised to see Vida alongside her deceased father if she believed Vida was still alive.

The weakness: Although there were witnesses, this was not a controlled experiment. We cannot conclusively exclude the possibility that the patient learned something about Vida's death without her family realizing it.

2. THE NINE-YEAR-OLD BOY WHO SAW HIS SISTER AFTER A CAR ACCIDENT

Reported in 1995 | Physician K. M. Dale's account

A nine-year-old boy named Eddie Cuomo was hospitalized with a serious fever.

His parents and hospital staff had been watching him closely for approximately 36 hours.

At about 3 a.m., Eddie's fever broke and he regained consciousness.

He immediately began telling his parents that he had been to heaven.

He described meeting his deceased grandfather, aunt, and uncle.

His father apparently thought Eddie was delirious.

Then Eddie mentioned another person.

His 19-year-old sister, Teresa.

Eddie said Teresa had told him to return to life.

There was a problem with that story.

Teresa was alive, as far as the family knew. She was attending college in Vermont, and her father had spoken with her two nights earlier.

His father became upset and asked the doctor to sedate Eddie.

Later that morning, the family telephoned Teresa's college.

They learned she had been killed in an automobile accident shortly after midnight.

College officials had reportedly been trying unsuccessfully to contact the family.

The boy's experience, according to the account, occurred only a few hours after his sister's death.

If those events happened exactly as described, it is difficult to explain the timing as wishful thinking.

But the account was published in a collection of extraordinary experiences, not accompanied by independently available hospital records, telephone logs, and accident records. That substantially limits how much weight we can give it.

3. THE INTENSIVE CARE PATIENT WHOSE SISTER HAD DIED A WEEK EARLIER

2008 | United Kingdom | Documented by intensive care nurse Penny Sartori

This case has something the others often lack: a nurse who personally witnessed part of the event and subsequently described it in her own words.

A critically ill patient was deteriorating in an intensive care unit.

His family was called to the hospital at approximately 3 a.m. because staff feared he might die.

His condition improved slightly, and his exhausted relatives went home.

Then something unusual happened.

Nurse Penny Sartori and a colleague noticed that the patient had opened his eyes.

He was smiling broadly and appeared to be having a conversation with people the nurses couldn't see.

When his family returned, he told them that his mother and grandmother had visited him.

Both were deceased.

But he was puzzled because his sister had been there too.

His sister had died the previous week. The family had deliberately kept the news from him.

Sartori described witnessing the patient's apparent conversation and learning about the sister's death from the family the following day. She personally recounted the incident on her website in December 2013.

That makes it more than a completely anonymous secondhand anecdote.

Still, the nurses did not independently observe the people he described, and the exact timing of his experience cannot be objectively established.

4. THE LITTLE GIRL WHO MET A BROTHER SHE NEVER KNEW EXISTED

Published in 1983 | Reported by psychiatrist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross

A young girl underwent heart surgery and nearly died.

During her near-death experience, she reportedly met a boy who seemed strangely familiar.

She identified him as her brother.

But she didn't believe she had a brother.

When she told her father what had happened, he became emotional.

He explained that she actually had a brother who had died before she was born.

According to Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, the girl had not known about him.

Think about the distinction.

Seeing a deceased grandmother you loved could be explained by memory and longing.

Seeing a brother whose existence you supposedly never knew about is a different question.

But it still depends on whether she truly had no prior knowledge and whether her description was specific enough to exclude coincidence or suggestive interpretation.

The available account doesn't establish those facts to a scientific standard.

5. THE MAN WHO IDENTIFIED HIS MOTHER IN A PHOTOGRAPH

1978 | Reported by cardiologist Maurice Rawlings

A 48-year-old man suffered a cardiac arrest.

During his near-death experience, he reported entering a beautiful landscape filled with colors, vegetation, and light.

He encountered two women.

One was his stepmother.

The other, he believed, was his biological mother.

There was something extraordinary about that second encounter.

His biological mother had died when he was only 15 months old.

His father remarried, and the man reportedly had never even seen a photograph of his biological mother.

Weeks after his cardiac arrest, his aunt visited with an old photograph containing several people.

According to the report, the man immediately identified his mother in the group.

His father was astonished.

If he had never seen her photograph and had never been told what she looked like, how did he recognize her?

That's a legitimate question.

But to evaluate the identification scientifically, we'd need to know how the photograph was presented, whether anyone gave him clues, and whether he had previously described the woman's appearance in writing.

Those safeguards were not documented.

6. THE MAN WHO APPARENTLY MET HIS BIOLOGICAL FATHER, WITHOUT KNOWING WHO HE WAS

Reported in 2004 | Dutch cardiologist Pim van Lommel

This is probably the strangest of the six.

A Dutch man suffered a cardiac arrest and experienced what he believed was a journey into another dimension.

During the experience, he saw his deceased grandmother.

He also encountered another man.

The stranger looked at him lovingly, but he had no idea who he was.

He recovered.

More than ten years passed.

Eventually, his mother became seriously ill. Near the end of her life, she revealed a family secret.

The man he had always believed was his father was not his biological father.

His biological father was a Jewish man who had been deported and killed during World War II.

She showed her son a photograph.

According to the account, he recognized the stranger from his near-death experience more than a decade earlier.

Van Lommel published the man's account in his research on near-death experiences.

This is fascinating, but it also illustrates a serious evidentiary problem.

There was a ten-year gap between the experience and the photograph. Unless the stranger's appearance had been documented before his mother revealed the secret, the identification depends on the man's retrospective recollection.

That leaves open ordinary explanations involving memory and recognition.

HOW MANY CASES LIKE THIS EXIST?

Greyson's collection of 665 near-death experiences included:

138 reported encounters with deceased people (21%).

25 reported encounters with living people (4%).

Those numbers concern all reported encounters, not just cases involving an unknown death or an unidentified relative.

There is no reliable population-wide count of the narrower category. Greyson's paper gathers examples but does not establish how frequently independently corroborated cases occur.

WHAT DO I MAKE OF THESE STORIES?

I would give the greatest evidentiary weight to accounts involving an identifiable medical witness, a description made before anyone disclosed the death, and independently documented dates.

By that standard, the Vida case and Penny Sartori's ICU patient are worth examining closely.

The photograph-identification cases are fascinating, but weaker. A person recognizing somebody in a photograph years afterward is not the same as a person recording a detailed description before anyone knows whose photograph will be shown.

And none of these reports, even if accurately described, conclusively proves life after death.

But I wouldn't dismiss them all as meaningless, either.

The central question is whether any case establishes that a person acquired accurate information they genuinely could not have known. The stronger that documentation becomes, the harder an ordinary explanation has to work.

Greyson himself acknowledged that many of these cases lack adequate documentation. He argued that they deserve further investigation, not that every reported encounter has been proven.

His full paper is available here:

https://anthrosource.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/j.1548-1409.2010.01064.x

One thing does stand out across these stories: the deceased person often appears not as a frightening figure, but as someone welcoming, reassuring, or accompanying the person nearing death. That similarity is real in the reports, even though its cause remains unsettled.

Historians like William Harris and Catherine Hezser note that antiquity generally operated under a baseline literacy rate of around 10% across the Roman Empire. Factoring in that the region was heavily rural (roughly 70% rural), total literacy in the Land of Israel is often calculated to be 3% or lower.

I admit that the story of "Jesus" is somewhat apocryphal, but the distillation of "his teachings" is 180 and way better than those of any other analogous figure.

Why aren't there any other evidence of his "teachings" left behind?

If he was so transformational during those 3 years, why didn't anybody else capture any piece of his wisdom in some form or fashion?

Why are we stuck relying on a Jewish Cop turn Religious Zealot (Paul) and the anonymous writings of the Gospels DECADES later?

Um obviously if Jesus was ackshually the son of God he'd have spent his time writing about it rather than demonstrating it to inspire others to do so. I mean, if we had a piece of paper from Him saying he was the son of God then there wouldn't be any room for doubt.

No I wouldn't, because the Bible lists NUMEROUS examples of God directly intervening to stop a Human from committing a sin.

King Abimelech (Gen 20:3-6)

Pharaoh (Gen 12:11–20)

David (1 Samuel 25:26-34)

Abraham (Gen 22:10-12)

Saul (1 Samuel 19:18-24)

"Free Will" is just a convenient cop-out to explain why God allows Humans to commit such horrible acts against each other.

Lmao. Yeah, the bible makes it very clear that God would NEVER make his existence obvious in response to people doubting him:

21 Elijah went before the people and said, “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.”

But the people said nothing.

22 Then Elijah said to them, “I am the only one of the Lord’s prophets left, but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets. 23 Get two bulls for us. Let Baal’s prophets choose one for themselves, and let them cut it into pieces and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. 24 Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the Lord. The god who answers by fire—he is God.”

Then all the people said, “What you say is good.”

25 Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose one of the bulls and prepare it first, since there are so many of you. Call on the name of your god, but do not light the fire.” 26 So they took the bull given them and prepared it.

Then they called on the name of Baal from morning till noon. “Baal, answer us!” they shouted. But there was no response; no one answered. And they danced around the altar they had made.

27 At noon Elijah began to taunt them. “Shout louder!” he said. “Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened.” 28 So they shouted louder and slashed themselves with swords and spears, as was their custom, until their blood flowed. 29 Midday passed, and they continued their frantic prophesying until the time for the evening sacrifice. But there was no response, no one answered, no one paid attention.

30 Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come here to me.” They came to him, and he repaired the altar of the Lord, which had been torn down. 31 Elijah took twelve stones, one for each of the tribes descended from Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord had come, saying, “Your name shall be Israel.” 32 With the stones he built an altar in the name of the Lord, and he dug a trench around it large enough to hold two seahs[a] of seed. 33 He arranged the wood, cut the bull into pieces and laid it on the wood. Then he said to them, “Fill four large jars with water and pour it on the offering and on the wood.”

34 “Do it again,” he said, and they did it again.

“Do it a third time,” he ordered, and they did it the third time. 35 The water ran down around the altar and even filled the trench.

36 At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: “Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command. 37 Answer me, Lord, answer me, so these people will know that you, Lord, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.”

38 Then the fire of the Lord fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench.

39 When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, “The Lord—he is God! The Lord—he is God!”

40 Then Elijah commanded them, “Seize the prophets of Baal. Don’t let anyone get away!” They seized them, and Elijah had them brought down to the Kishon Valley and slaughtered there.

My point is obviously that if one believes that the biblical stories such as that one actually happened, then it doesn’t make sense to say that God is unwilling to provide evidence for his existence.

So you’ve got a dilemma: either you can claim that God is happy to demonstrate his own existence to skeptics in the form of spectacular displays of divine power, in which case, where are these displays? Or you can claim that he isn’t willing to do so, in which case you have no explanation for why your bible says he did precisely that.

I hope this is now simplified enough for you?

The levels of Spacepornian stupidity ITT have been bothering me since I read this.

First, the premise of "If God real why not provide more evidence HUH?" is so obvious that it's hard to believe a 50 year old man got high and thought it was so profound he'd share it with other grown men.

Second, the specific proof he's looking for is... writing? How would that *reduce* doubt? If we had a letter from Jesus asserting he's the son of God how would that resolve any skeptics doubts?!

Third, the specific thing he think Jesus could have been clesrer on his stance on violence? What?! Pretty sure there's quite a lot on that!

Hey Diary, it’s me, Jesus, and I’m writing this in my own special diary. You know, the one I keep in my heart, not in a book. Today is the day I’m going to have this super special meal with my best friends — my disciples. It’s like the biggest, most important dinner ever, and I can’t wait to share it with you.

First, we all sit down at this long table. It’s kind of like a big family dinner, but with extra magic. I see Peter looking a little nervous, and John smiling like he’s ready for adventure. I tell them, “Come, all of you, be happy and eat.” It’s like when you have your favorite friends over for a really special night- everyone feels warm and happy.

Then, I take the bread and the wine. I say, “This is my body and my blood.” It’s like when you share your favorite snack with your friends, but it’s even more special because it’s about love and friendship. I want you to remember me, and to remember how much I love you.

I also tell them that one of you is going to betray me. I can see Peter’s face change- he’s like, “What? Me? No way!” It’s kind of like when you find out your best friend is going to do something silly, but I know it’s part of the plan. I want you to be brave and not be scared.

After the meal, I wash their feet. It’s like when you clean up after a big game, but I do it for them so they can feel clean and ready for the next adventure. I tell them, “I have told you everything you need to know. You can do it.” It’s like when your mom says, “You can do it, you’ve got this”.

I feel so happy and full of love, and I know that even though I’m going to be away for a while, I’ll always be with you in my heart. This is the most important meal I’ve ever had, and I want you to remember it forever.

Not the expert but:

1 Others have pointed out the low literacy rate. His apostles were presumably illiterate (part of the messaging, really - fishermen etc). Writing things down wouldn't have been particularly helpful in spreading the gospel in an oral culture.

2 Perhaps contemporaneous written records of His works did exist but were lost to the shuffle of time. The significance of those accounts would not have been apparent right away. How many comprehensive records of the goings-on of villages in Judea exist, period? I mean, there are no written records documenting Jesus at all, but that isn't taken as particularly strong proof he didn't exist as a historical figure/leader of a religious sect.

I think much can be explained as, to the Romans of the time--specifically, 20-50 AD or thereabouts--Christianity would have seemed to be one of many eastern cult religions. There would not have been anything particularly special about it to them.

1 - So why do people assume (incorrectly) that the Gospels were written by the Disciples? Either people were illiterate hillbiliies that couldn't write a grocery list, or some of his followers were intelligent enough to write his life story in high-level Koine Greek. (They weren't)

2 - So how were so many of Paul's letters preserved contemporaneously, but nobody thought to save the other Disciples writings? According to Paul, he actually went to Jerusalem and met Peter and James and spent weeks chilling with them.

this is why we had prophets who stood on hillsides and preached the Good Word. It was all word of mouth handed down thru the generations. There wasnt a lot of shit written down about anything back then, just lore and round-fire story telling and whatnot. Sometimes they had rituals based on the messages, sometimes they sang songs about it, but it was always passed down by the village wise people.
