I needed another way to procrastinate during exam period: http://xoxoreader.blogspot.com

This has been on my mind for a while (partly because of zxcvzxcv's constant trolling for it) but I'm not sure how it's going to shape out yet. We'll see over the course of the next month or so. Feel free to post some feedback in the meantime.

GTO needs to figure out how to generate custom RSS feeds. For example, you could get notified about any threads that break 100 posts, any threads with "Cravath" in the title, etc.

Also, maybe a Digg-style threat rating system? People could '180' threads they really liked.

Ratings/moderation would be cool. That led to the Comedy Goldmine at SA, which is still pretty fun to read: http://forums.somethingawful.com/forumdisplay.php?forumid=21 It would be a good way to keep track of all the "classic" threads that people keep asking for (although that was partly the idea behind my starting this blog too).

To briefly summarize, blog software is going to be integrated with the boards so that an individual can automatically create a blog by clicking on one button.

After that, the individual will be able to make board posts and then have those posts appear on his or her blog *and* on the board simply by checking off a button on the thread creation page.

Basically, the first post in the thread would be the main blog post, and then any replies to the blog post on the board will be posted as comments on the blog (people would be able to also post comments directly into the blog that would not show up on the board, and blog owners would be able to make posts directly into a blog that would not show up on the board).

We'd probably have other options available too, like not having board comments show up as blog comments, or the ability to delete/moderate post replies before they show up on the blog as comments (but not delete/moderate posts from the thread version).

Yeah, it's going to take a while for me to get the hang of this. Part of today has been trying to guess at what should go up and also playing with labels and the like. I suspect for each person that wants fewer posts, there's somebody else who finds it useless because their favorite thread didn't get posted. Keep up the feedback and we'll see how it goes.

I liked the voting idea because posters love rating stuff and you could also auto-generate a list of the top topics currently, yesterday, last month, etc.

Plus if you linked it to certain posters such that they were themselves rated for posting high-rated threads, you'd incentivize interesting contributions.

Two possibilities I think: either they don't want to access the board from work, or they don't want to access the particular thread from work.

Somebody might not want to access the board because there's a lot of not work-appropriate thread titles that come up, even if you don't click them. You have to assume it's pretty trivial (and not entirely paranoid) for your IT dept to log your web pages and send an alert if you're constantly loading pages with racial epithets and sex references in the text.

Somebody might not want to access a particular thread because the thread or some of the content in it might not be appropriate. Presumably then in my blog I would filter out some of that stuff while still presenting the "good" stuff. This wasn't really what I was thinking of doing though, so I'll have to think a little about that one. Mostly I would prefer to post the parts that would make somebody want to click the link.

1) board in a completely different format that makes it look like a regular blog

2) board w/ selected threads, chosen with a Digg-like voting system

3) board w/ selected threads, chosen by intermediaries who screen out the racist garbage and highlight quality

Sounds promising.

I wish there was a law-digg out there. Those damn digg nerds are into computers and science, and not the law. There are a lot of legal bloggers out there, it would be nice to have a way of seeing the most popular stories/blog posts in a digg-like way. Digg.com doesn't even have a law category.

If you have #2 you probably don't need #3. Seriously I don't know who else would have as much free time and lack of motivation to do something else to try to do what I'm doing with the blog (which I may very well just stop doing after a month or so if it stops being interesting/fun to me).

Well presumably there'd be a large number of people involved acting as intermediaries.

But I guess you're right that it might not be necessary, unless there are large numbers of people who would deliberately vote for the most obnoxious threads.

Yeah I thought about that, but this is where my original disclaimer came in that this is basically only going to be about what I find interesting. This is mostly because I thought about the blog as a way to keep track of my favorite threads. I know this hampers the interest in the blog somewhat because I'm not the most interesting or drama-prone poster here, but that's what you have to deal with when there's an editor. Definitely something I'll keep it in mind though.

Also I'll start announcing in each blogged thread that I've blogged it. Gives you a heads up in case you need to find the thread later, and I get to spam the blog some more.

What do you mean? All my blog posts are threads on Xoxo, so basically you won't see anything on the blog that isn't on Xoxo. (Occasionally I'll write a line or two of commentary in the blog entry that I don't post on the board, but I'd rather let the thread speak for itself.)

I didn't know if your blog was going to just be threads on xoxo or if you would write ne content. Some people like having their own specific work on their blog.

Sorry for the confusion--I'm new at this.

I did check out your site and I like the fact that you narrow down the threads on xoxo. Most of the threads on xo seem to be just clutter.

I think too many blogs are just for the sake of the bloggers stoking their egos. It is very rare that I am actually interested in their preaching, ranting, or gender-confused and mentally unstable literary stylings. Anyway, I hope to avoid that.

Glad you enjoyed the blog.
