Here we go. This is comparing firm-for-firm, office-for-office, summer associate classes. Early, sure, but you can compare how identical offices have stacked up so far.

FIRST column is the total of 2007 summer associates at those firms.

SECOND column is net gain/loss of summer associates from the school from 2006 to 2007 at those firms. ***Gain/losses of 0 or 1 EXCLUDED.***

THIRD column is the % of that law school class it represents.

FOR EXAMPLE, in the chart below, USNWR ranked #1 Yale has 45 summer associates at the V100 firms listed below for 2007, representing a +17 increase in net summer associates at those firms from 2006, or 8.5% of their class.

Firms included: Akin DC; Baker Botts DC; Covington DC; Gibson NY, DC; Irell LA; Jenner DC; Jones Day NY; Kirkland CHI, LA; Latham SD; Munger LA; Wilmer BOS and DC.

1 Yale 45 17 8.5%

8 Michigan 27 10 2.7%

4 Columbia 35 7 1.9%

8 Virginia 26 6 1.6%

15 UCLA 15 5 1.6%

18 GWU 20 5 0.9%

27 Illinois 7 4 2.1%

39 Ohio State 4 4 1.8%

4 NYU 23 3 0.7%

27 Boston College 10 3 1.1%

43 American 5 3 0.6%

87 Northeastern 3 3 1.4%

8 Boalt 11 2 0.8%

16 Texas 7 2 0.5%

65 Loyola CA 2 2 0.5%

17 Vanderbilt 5 -2 -1.0%

27 Washington 0 -2 -1.1%

34 BYU 3 -2 -1.3%

37 George Mason 1 -2 -0.9%

37 Indiana 2 -2 -0.9%

22 Boston U 8 -3 -1.0%

6 Chicago 21 -4 -2.1%

2 Stanford 24 -5 -2.9%

11 Duke 9 -5 -2.5%

3 Harvard 73 -6 -1.1%

12 Northwestern 14 -6 -2.5%

14 Georgetown 21 -14 -2.4%

Michigan has 3 each at Munger and Covington. I don't think you're going to have much to make fun of from these firms.

Why did you pick this particular group of firms? Some especially aren't particularly desirable (Jones Day NY). Are these the only firms for which there is currently data?

These are the only firms with 2006 and 2007 summer associate data available. It's a head-to-head comparison of identical firms with summer classes between the two. There are more firms with data for 2006 and for 2007, but no others (yet) that overlap.

Yale is probably up by so much b/c of the large DC representation so far. It would be interesting to see DC v. non-DC firms for them. I bet DC will be up by a lot this year, where other cities will be down.

I suppose, but it indicates that more Yale students are going to DC this summer than last year. It's a direct comparison to last year's placement, and Yale's doing much better placing this year in identical firms.
