The city is divided into quarters. I would guess 85% of DC's lawyers live in NW. SE is ghetto and you won't be living there (with the exception of a small part west of the river --- which is really part of Capitol hill). NE has a few bright points, but they're not easily metro accessible and they'll be a long commute to Main. You might think about SW --- there are some nice neighborhoods near the Nationals' ballpark that might be in your price range and would be a short commute.

Main is in NW in a neighborhood generally called Penn Quarter. You won't find an apartment there for your budget. But if you head north of Penn Quarter, there are some kinda sketchy neighborhoods (start looking around 5th & M) that would be a short commute and still be in your price range, but not egregiously unsafe.

This si the type of post I wanted. TY, I appreciate it.

How far is SW from Main, approx.?

What is the price range for a place around Main?

Do these neighborhoods (SW, Main, north of Penn Quarter) have stuff to do at night? Do things shut down at a certain time in DC?

TYIA.

Near-SW is a ten minute metro ride from Archives Metro, which is the nearest to Main. Look at apartments near the Navy Yard and Waterfront Metro stations.

I know people who have found places near Main for less than $1500 with a long term lease, but that's rare. Most of that area is $2k or more. Unless you find someone desperate to sublet a studio, you're going to have to look farther afield.

DC ain't NYC. It ain't even Seattle. Shit closes down early here. One nice thing about Chinatown (which is immediately north of Penn Quarter, and may still be a little expensive for your budget) is that there are decent restaurants open until 2:00 or 3:00 AM.

Look at the following neighborhoods too. They're all within 25 minutes of Main and you should be able to find a room in a house for less than $1k: Columbia Heights, U-St Corridor, Mt. Pleasant, Barracks Row (which is really a subpart of Capitol Hill).

Try something like the U street corridor, which is mostly safe but gritty enough to be relatively cheap.

BTW, if you've never lived in a real city before you're going to be a bit shocked, DC is a very expensive place to live.

Distribution is tighter around a slightly lower mean, mostly because white people only live in NW whereas NYC has Brooklyn, &c. Wouldn't surprise me if DC actually had a higher median price for places you'd consider living.

The U st corridor used to be so slummy about ten years ago. There was a club called the Kaffa House that used to rent the space out for punk/hardcore shows, and the door at said shows used to get held up on the regular. I know a few people who got beat up walking to their cars. Unbelievable how nice it is now, relatively speaking.

Shit, most of DC fits that description.

No, bro. That's D.C. District Court, I think. It's not that far away --- maybe a fifteen minute walk. The closest metro stations to that address are Judiciary Square (red line) and Archives (yellow/green). Find an apartment near one of those lines and you'll be fine.

Let's make this easy: Rent in either Columbia Heights (sketchier, more fun, TONS of 22 yo white girls working at nonprofits) or Cleveland Park (safer, more yuppieish, less fun). Done.

If I were on a tight-ish budget and spending a summer in DC, I wouldn't even look around the city. I'd just find a cheap room in a house in Columbia Heights with some fun-seeming dudes who are permanent residents. If you're single, you should be hooking up with public interest 22 yo girls all summer long.

Also consider Mt. Pleasant, which is a cheaper but slightly sketchier extension of Columbia Heights.

Eh, I like being in the middle of things in actual cities. I'm not much of an outskirt type of guy. If I wind up paying about 500 more in rent for the summer, it is fine. I was just trying to get a general range of the prices.

Further Note: Looks like the DCrt is 717 Madison Place; USAO is 555 4th street. So, I don't really know what the USAO bldg is....

I would recommend staying in NW (Although some parts of Southwest and by the Nationals park are ok). Unfortunately, its going to be difficult finding rent in your price range in NW - it might be doable with a roommate. But the cost of living in DC is insane. Remember, DC has a metro system that extends well into portions of Virginia and Maryland. You'll likely find cheaper rent outside the district but within walking distance to a Metro station, this might be a more realistic option for your price range. Within NW in the city, I'd recommend looking at the U Street corridor, Shaw (esp. parts near Logan Circle), Columbia Heights. However, be careful. In many of these areas you can find cheaper rent but they can also be a bit sketchy. DC can quickly go from nice to nasty to nice.

I think during weekdays stations generally open at 5 am and close at midnight. During weekends (friday and sat), I think they generally close at 3 am. Please check out, http://www.wmata.com/ for more info. I'm not saying the DC metro is great, but a huge number of people (including I'm sure many at the Dept of Justice) commute to work each day from Virginia and Maryland by Metro.

I wouldn't agree. The buses were terrible. Anywhere he will be working/going to school will be near a metro. His apartment should be as well. It's much more prestigious to tell a girl that you're going to "take the metro home" than to tell her "yeah, I gotta catch the bus".

I don't think I'm too good for anything. But it is a confusing system if you're not from the area or haven't been there very long. I don't see how it's easier than the metro. I rarely had to go anywhere where walking or taking the metro wasn't my main means of getting around.

"Terrible in that everyone on it smells." Dude, come on. Now you just sound like a stuck up white girl. Not everyone on it smells. No worse than the metro, at least.

Furthermore, simply not knowing the system doesn't mean it's confusing. I'm not from DC, but I learned to use it with no problems. It's pretty easy, especially if you don't have to transfer, and if you use the wmata trip planner then you shouldn't have any issues at all.

Maybe you lived close enough to a metro line that took you straight to work, but there are whole areas of DC that are more easily accessible by bus than metro, like Glover Park. Or getting from Georgetown to the Smithsonian. Just take one of the 30s and bam! you're there. Etc.

For what it's worth, I take the metro to/from work several times a week, so I don't have some weird resentment towards it or anything. I've just heard a whole lot of dipshits make stupid comments about the bus, even though they've taken it maybe once or twice in their lives.

Like you said, the zone system was really strange, very hard to follow. Cab drivers were constantly screwing people over, too, by unnecessarily driving through extra zones to get to the destination or just lying about how many zones you'd traveled through. The zone maps in the cabs were too vague for most people to really be able to tell.

...Though you can still get screwed if they decide to take you on a really roundabout way to your destination. Happened to me a few months ago. Cab driver obviously thought I was a pansy-ass college student. Boy did he regret that.

Nice places in Arlington close to the metro can be every bit as expensive- or more expensive- than living in DC.

Look around Arlington, which is pretty safe - Ballston, Virginia Square/GMU, Court House Metro stops. You can find out how hard-core Arlington is by viewing this video:

dupont/logan circle/u street are tops, nightlife is easily accessible and it's easy to get downtown via the metro or bus. it might be tough to find a place in your price range but if you start looking early enough you can probably find something as long as you live with a roommate.

columbia heights, shaw, adams morgan and mt. pleasant are also worth looking into. CH/AM/MP/Shaw will have better deals but just be careful about the specific block and metro proximity.

I grew up in D.C. (but haven't lived there in about 10 years), and I find it amazing that people keep throwing around Columbia Heights/Mt. Pleasant, and the so-called U Street Corridor. Not too long ago, those places were decidedly NOT COOL at all to live in. I would have compared them with Bed-Stuy or Bushwick in Brooklyn. Even Adams Morgan was pretty sketchy until somewhat recently.

Thanks to "gentrification" they are now the hip places to live, and no, this is not a flame. Things have changed a great deal in DC in the last 10 years.

If it were me, I'd look to live w/in walking distance of a metro stop on either the red or orange line west of downtown DC. I'd probably start looking for aparments near Van Ness, Woodley Park, Dupont Circle, and Foggy Bottom metro stops first.
