If your mom “works” and she didn’t ace OCI, you’re basically fucked. This should not be normalized. If you don’t have Rides to ECs or Practice you’re going to bomb OCI and die of an overdose.
The $3000k/mo that people spend can’t be justified imho fwiw

Core claim: Universal, heavily subsidized child care — especially from birth — can have negative effects on children’s development if implemented poorly or on too broad a scale.
Quality matters: The piece argues that universal programs often end up low-quality because they’re cheaper, scaled quickly, and can’t provide the one-on-one interaction infants need — meaning universal from-birth care can harm more than help.
Bottom line: The article isn’t saying all child care is bad. It’s asserting that universal child care as currently being rolled out in some places — particularly from birth and without enough quality controls — might harm child development because of rushed scaling, low adult-child ratios, and insufficient individual interaction opportunities.

if you are a top 1%er, than its probably better off for you that society doesnt use taxes to help cover basic needs from a direct tax perspective.
even Musk cant use a billion dollars of healthcare a year, so he would never be better off financially.
but for the 99% of americans, yes having a basic need met by the society that they live in would be good for them and for society.

You must be fucking retarded.
How would they have "more expensive options for healthcare" if the govt became the Single Payer?
Why the Govt allow healthcare providers to charge whatever they want for medical treatment?
They don't do that shit with Medicare/Medicaid/Tricare, so why would they START doing that with Universal?

The thread is about universal childcare, which is a disaster.
Regarding the healthcare the military receives, I'm not sure that it's all that great given the amount of issues the VA has had. Seems like a total disaster overall.
Bigger issue (which I think you probably agree on) is that people think "free for everyone" will also mean "free and really good for everyone." But "free for everyone" just means "free" and quality gets pushed down because personal services don't scale without people and the quality of people decreases the more you bring into any system.

What a n00b so I'll be nice.
VA and active duty military gets 2 different healthcare systems. For active: TRICARE covers everything: primary care, specialists, hospital care, prescriptions. Its a full-service healthcare, similar to a national health system.
For VA, its a closed network, doesn't target all health conditions, and isn't national so where you live matters.

What's the average age of active duty military? Might it help that they are forced to keep physically active, go to sleep at certain times, and eat in a cafeteria that is run by the military?
Not sure that the active duty military population is really comparable to the general population of the US (including all of its old people.) It is always going to be cheaper to provide healthcare for younger and healthier people (because they require way less of it.)
As per other poasts, I am not opposed to some sort of single payer program and think our current system is basically just a handout to finance capital. But I also think people need to come to grips with the healthcare system doing less in general and taking more responsibility for their own health.

With regards to healthcare, I don't disagree necessarily. But that's because the current healthcare system in America is effectively a system to have money flow through a series of PE-backed companies that add little-to-no value (or extract value at the cost of the consumer) and megacorps that centralize everything to become a sort of oligopoly version of single payer healthcare (just look at CVS). We basically have a frankenstein system whose sole purpose is to let certain people skim off of transactions.
Given how much high earners need to spend on health insurance, particularly if they don't work at a large corporation, it is absolutely worse than a normal single payer program. Especially if you have a family (or are starting one.)
The issue more broadly in America and in places with single payer healthcare is that people's expectations of the healthcare system are way too high. Far too many people abdicate personal responsibility and good habits that would keep them out of the system. Instead, they look to the healthcare system to keep them healthy regardless of their own choices.
And if you look at places like the UK, this is increasingly a problem. Their National Health Service is in dire straits on account of this. Especially as the quality of their demographics shifts dramatically.

A national health plan should make 90% of things cheap and easy to get.
If you get cancer and its state 3 or 4? Well that's what private pay or insurance is for. But you broke a bone? Here's an x-ray and cast for $10.

Almost nobody in NYC can actually afford child care. It’s 3k per kid in NYC, which is about the price of a studio apartment in Brooklyn.
Really shocked to see poor MAGA people coming out against this in NY. I’ve never seen someone irl say they didn’t like 3k. It’s just a credit to existing daycares to cover the cost.
Idk at what salary can you even afford to have two kids in NYC without this?

Thinking more about this, the entire premise is basically evil when you consider *why* rags like The Economist push for it. It's not that they necessarily want the best outcomes for children, rather they simply want more people in the workforce full-time without breaks to "grow" GDP. Even if growing GDP just means more transactions and less actual value created through value-added production.
Seeing nominal GDP grow is more important to these "people" than healthy families because they are completely fucking insane.
Even if, somehow, universal childcare could be rolled out where every kid has one-on-one attention at all times, it will never equate to being at home with a loving mother.
