The most desirable place to play for in the NHL is the Toronto Maple Leafs. They have a biggest fanbase and the median NHL player is an English speaker from Canada, Toronto is by far the biggest team in Canada. So the median pro hockey player growing up idolized the Leafs who are de facto Canada's team. I would say most guys dream of wearing the blue sweater on some level. |

You also have ultra small market teams like Winnipeg and Ottawa and Calgary who don't have the budget. The main question is why aren't Toronto and Montreal better. Those teams are rich and don't have an excuse. The Leafs and Habs are a lot like the New York Knicks they print money and have terrible ownership. Like the Knicks are owned by some fat guy like RSF whose dad started Comcast and he just gifted his idiot kid the Knicks. I think the Leafs and Habs are the same way they're just owned by rich idiots who don't care and the fanbase is rabid and keep handing over the money. Dallas Cowboys are the same, the fans keep filling the seats despite all the disappointment. So there's really only two Canadian teams that could win if they tried to really hard but ownership is out to lunch and they're just crazy profitable anyway. Remember Dion Phaneuf? He was like the First Man of Canada. Auston Matthews has assumed the role. It's a huge deal to star for the Leafs. You're a huge celebrity for life anywhere in Canada. I'm not saying that's for everyone but some people want to be that guy.

This is a team whose name originates from "Canadian hockey club." It's as blue blood as it gets. The other original 6 teams are all prestigious but none came close to the success of Montreal.
The second most prestigious team of all the is the Red Army, the Soviet team who dominated for almost half a century. They crushed everybody for decades.
If you want to only included expansion teams probably Pittsburgh (because of winning) or Edmonton (because of Gretzky). |

They do have a huge fanbase but ljl at being prestigious because of 2 Cups in the 70s. Most overrated team. Their ownership doesn't try even a little bit to make the playoffs or go on a Cup run. Pittsburgh has multiple eras of success. They are way more prestigious than tttFlyers who never win anything.
Also people forget LA Kings area a blue blood expansion franchise. Huge market team and they had Gretzky plus two recent cups. |
