I took the placement test knowing 100% Spanish and still had to go to the beginner level.

It's a language that cares a lot about the beauty of sound, so a lot of rules are made for the "musical sounds".

For example, in Spanish 'el agua', turns in Italian into 'l'aqua' (the water), 'el amigo' turns into 'l'amico'. It's a big struggle with a ton of nonsense rules.

The easiest is Spanish. This is ChatGPT take on it:

Spanish: Often considered the easiest due to its relatively simple grammar and pronunciation.

French: Shares a lot of vocabulary with English, though pronunciation can be tricky.

Portuguese: Similar to Spanish in many respects, with some differences in pronunciation and vocabulary.

Italian: Grammar and vocabulary are similar to Spanish and French, making it relatively easy for English speakers.

Dutch: Grammatically more similar to English, but with some differences that can present challenges.

German: Has more complex grammar (e.g., cases) but shares many vocabulary roots with English.

By 'difficult' I probably mean I thought knowing Spanish would make it a breeze. But you do have to put a lot of effort into it and the verb conjugation is changes a shitload whereas in Spanish it's simple as fuck.

German is simple and all the grammar makes perfect logical sense. The most annoying part is memorizing Dem Die Das Die, and native speakers still have to work on that as middle schoolers. It’s also 180 that you learn the alphabet plus the umlaut sounds and a handful of consonant blends and then all pronunciation is perfectly consistent. It’s like the opposite of English, which is objectively retarded in pronunciation and grammar.

French pronunciation isn’t hard if you have any kind of ear/musical ability/auditory capability. People who suck at French pronunciation also tend to suck at other much easier language re pronunciation like German.

I've studied German and French too. French was the easiest by far. German is difficult, Italian is average.
